Mauser 98 "scout"

In at least one of Aargaard's articles he has a scout rifle borrowed from Brent Clifton made up on a Mexican 1936 - a small ring, 98. Complete with a stock with bipod legs that pulled out of the fore end, and a butt stock magazine trap. Ching sling. It weighed 8 pounds unloaded - a "pseudo-Scout". Chapter 32, "Finn Aargaard Selected Works", Wolfe Publishing Co.

Skip the mags, that’s the main reason I got rid of my ruger gun site. None of the mags I tried could be trusted 100%, the protruding mags were annoying as well. If your going to actually run a scout scope you could just use stripper clips instead of junk overpriced mags. Anyway I have gone a different rout and just picked up a used sako black bear for way less money than the gun site.

M98 8x57. Scoped, 8 on the stock 4 in mag. Under 8lb. Had it up for sale but I was having pre-sellers remorse.

MRP I am tossing around the idea of building something similar to your K98 scout. What brand and what model scope have you used and also how much eye relief does the scope have?

Jut a cheep test scope to see if I liked it better the a red-dot. It's 9.5" eye relief a little short for it but the leupold I was looking at only needs 9.3".

I'm working on one of these now from a Zastava. I'm just concentrating on the peep sights for now, because the scope mount will be much more difficult to figure out. it looks like it will take a stripper clip slot fairly easily. I might only take the barrel down to 20 inches if not 19.
