Mauser 98 Side Safety

put a timney trigger with side safety into your rifle. The Trade Ex wing 2 position bolt mounted safeties are junk.

This is very good advice. I wouldn't go so far as to call them junk but they do need to be fitted so that the stop on the bottom side of the lever moves easily through the slot on the cocking piece. It has to do this in such a manner that the cocking piece stays against the sear or just off it. If it can move past the sear, the cocking piece will not be stopped by the sear and the rifle will fire when the safety lever is swung into the OFF position.

I have installed a few of them and you need to take care as well as IMHO spend more time than it's worth. The bit of extra money for a Timney trigger with a side lever safety is well spent as long as it's installed properly. Usually these need some fitting as well.

Bearhunter, do you find the safety lever stayes on positively. On my safety from Tradex, the lever can be moved to the off position with too little pressure. I do not trust it.

I put a Boyd's trigger on a 96, and I find that the safety is very easy to move on and off. It's one of the things on my to do list this spring. Right now, it's not safe to use for hunting.
