i'm probably getting a mauser model 98 in 8mm from my uncle. I'm not to familiar with this model. I was just wondering if anyone owns one, and would be willing to share what they think about the gun, and what they've done with it (ie hunts, groupings, scopes, modifications, loads etc.)

Welcome BreakOne. There are quite a few variations of the M98 Mauser. They are one of, if not the, best bolt action designs of all time. You need to be carefull because the early version of the 8mm had a .318" bore, whereas the later version had the .323" bore. You would not want to shoot ammo that has .323" diameter bullets through the .318" bore!

It is always good to have a gunsmith check out an old rifle before shooting it. Jerry Kuhnhausen wrote a really good book on the Mauser design rifles, and you may want to grab a copy for future reference.

There are several ways to tell. Take a look at the trigger guard screws, are there lock screws or just two action screws?

Type 'mauser 98' into any search engine and duck. About 282,000 sites on Yahoo.
If the rifle is in its original military configuration, don't even think about scoping it. You'll drop the value in half.
Once you have it, post every marking on it for more info.
