I have had some time this weekend to haul out a couple of my more interesting guns to share with others, as I have appreciated all the info that has been provided by others on this site.

Anyway, similar to my thread on my Boer rifle purchase, a local seller had offered this gun to numerous buyers over the years, who had all passed as "someone had carved their initials in the stock". As I had wanted a WWI Mauser for my collection, I was happy to buy. Besides, the initials looked too professional, branded in, to be the work of some "E W Buba".

A few nights later on the Internet I came up with this.

" Einwohnerwehr Bayern

In a typical attempt to demonstrate its political autonomy, the federal state of Bavaria had the small arms issued to its members of the Einwohnerwehr marked E W B on pistol grips and rifle butts. This was naturally discontinued with the dissolution of the Einwohnerwehr in 1921.

The Einwohnerwehr was a paramilitary police force formed by an order of the Prussian Ministry of the Interior dated April 15, 1919, to allow citizens to protect themselves from looters, armed gangs, and revolutionaries. It was subject to the command of the local Reichswehr regiments which supplied its guns. This was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles, and after repeated demands by the IMKK, on June 29, 1921, the Berlin government dissolved the Einwohnerwehr. The Einwohnerwehr had a membership of hundreds of thousands and was formed mostly from former servicemen. Many of its members (for example Captain Ernst Roehm, future head of the SA [Sturmabteilung, a.k.a. the Brown Shirts]) eventually joined the Nazi Party. "

Excellent overall condition and bore. All numbers match except front barrel band. This marking really adds historical value to me.

Has anyone else come across this marking, on pistol (Lugers, I imagine) or rifle?

Was the Einwohnerwehr what I read refered to as the "freicorps" (my spelling is incorrect I am sure)

If any one had any more info about these organizations I 'd be interested to read it.

Einwohner + wehr = Citizen's Defence

Freikorps = Militia (I would say that's the closest translation)

** Germans don't often use the letter "c". Goes back to Monks having a distaste for the boring letter.

In terms of terminology they are the same, however, I am not sufficiently educated to equate them in terms of function.

What about Einwohnerwehr bund?

That rifle could have been used in the "Putsch"!

Thanks Skirksons for the explainantion. I have one refrence to the Freicorps recruiting at the end of WWI, they were especially interested in flamethrower men, specifically. Good equipment, pay and beer ration were promised and eligibilty for 'governement' pension even though as I understand it it had a purposefully loose government association(?)

My interest in the korps is why was there active employment for between 50,000 and and 250,000 soldiers on the eastern frontier!? And did these men ever really make a distinction between thier role circa 1917 and 1920?

Edit: sorry just rere as the post and I can't seem to give up the 'C' LOL

Germany was still fighting after the war ended on the Eastern Front to 1920ish 21ish (red scares); wars agaisnt communists in the East and the Baltics.

I think a lot of the Freikorps and Militias were simply named as such to circumvent Versailles. I could be wrong, of course.

I have an Amberg EWB marked Gew 98 dated 1917. Marking is identical on that one.

The Einwohner Wehr Bayern(Bavarian Citizen's Guard) was formed in the wake of the Munich Soviet (which was put down with extreme predjudice by the Freikorps in 1919) in order to prevent German Reds from fomenting further revolutionary trouble. The EWB was the largest organisiation of it's type with some 300,000 members. As it's arms were supplied from the "black" reichswehr budget they were intially not counted in the provisions of the Versailles treaty. As stated, the treaty caught up with the EWB (declared an illegal military formation) on June 27, 1921 and such arms were surrendered to the Allies.

The Freikorps avoided complete disarmament by hiding arms, temporarily demobbing formations and other subterfuges.

A little info on the Munich Soviet:

Perhaps the municipal authorities in Toronto might want to consider this as an alternate response to the gangster problem that's plagued us in recent years. They could sign me up for a rifle!:p

In all seriousness, thanks for sharing this interesting piece of history.

Thanks everyone for the information and comments. Glad to contribute what I can to the Nutz community!

As to the question from Claven2, I have not refinished stock in any way, can not find any sanding marks and metal seems to fit well in all the right places. Re-finished by someone in the past, I'll have to leave that for the experts to tell.

A question on German Mauser serial numbers, did they only go up to 4 digits (1 - 9,999), than start over at the factories? I ask because my rifles are all 4 digit.
