mauser 98k?

Put up a WTB add, Thats how I found mine. If your a shooter, don't limit yourself to a German one, there are many great 8mm Mauser rifles around. If your a collector then its a different story.

Only if you're a very selective collector.

Many 98s and variants were built in countries surrounding Germany.

Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Serbia, Romania, Austria to mention a few.

Some of the "other manufacturers" are even "arguably" better fitted rifles.

Unless you have a specific reason to limit yourself to "German" manufacturers, don't let the others pass you by. You would be doing yourself a great disservice.

Look at the Tradex site, a banner advertiser at the top of the page. They have 1912 Steyr 98s converted to 7.62x51. Much easier to get ammo for as well.

There's always Collectors Source and P&S Guns and Militaria as well. They, like Tradex, all have pics of the individual rifles. Their evaluation of condition are spot on as well.

There's a byf 44 in the EE tonight (Friday) if anyone is interested.

That one appears to be an East German or Czech Rework as the stock is postwar replacement and the buttplate looks to be blued. Original K98's buttplates were in the white. More Pics of the bolt and receiver would confirm this if it is restamped or electropencilled. If it is a rework, worth from $500-$600. You have to know what you're buying as a buyer, and selling as a seller.

+1.

German code. If it's a Czech it looks like a nice one. They usually have a single careful point punch through the swastika in the Reich eagle. Nice even blue. Bores are usually immaculate. Mix of waafed parts and not. They can get a little messy when it comes to numbers, Czechs usually numbered the major components but not the small stuff. Missing sight hood - might have had one of the VZ 24 hoods they liked to put on everything.

Hard to say w/out better pics. Need to do some homework before dropping that kind of cash.

Agreed, but since I'm neither the seller nor the buyer I kept my opinions to myself.

I'm just pointing out that there is a byf 44 for sale in the EE. Its up to prospective buyers to do their homework or ask for help. If a buyer wants my opinion they can PM me.

Get a israeli 98k in 308....converted from german, Czech etc rifles. FN made new ones in the 50's which were converted to 308.

Like I said people need to do their own research, especially when buying K98ks. It wasn't a mystery to me, it was obvious from the photos in the EE that the stock was sanded, etc.
