Mauser Action markings, Small Ring Mauser M-98a Carbine??

I bought a 98 mauser sporter the other day. awesome rifle, old world charm. Now I need to know about the small ring 98's that were produced? Seems from the markings on the action Crown over N, this is a pre 1940 nitro proof. but what throws me is what look like an inverted "T" on the top of the barrel.

I have looked up the Small ring 98's and from what I could find is that this was a Mauser M-98a carbine WW I era as it has checkering under the bolt handle. Can anyone enlighten me on this.

The bolt is definately from a Gew 98 or 98az and they can fetch good money. I sold one in the spring for $135.00. They fit the later 98k's also. I guess the guys on this forum would be better able to assist with the markings if you show some pictures. Like I said the older model bolts will fit the later 98k.
 
I was taking another look at the rifle, the barrel is 24" long and while it is a step barrel, the profile has been tapered out. The number of steps it has 2, 3 if you include the chamber area.
