I bought off the EE a couple years ago a 1908 Brazilian Mauser 7x57 in military configuration, the barrel is pitted about half the length of the barrel, shot out and useless. I can't hit a 6 inch target at 25 yards. I'm deciding at this point to what i should do, sell it, part it out or fix it.

Barrels are nearly impossible to find up here, in full length and at low cost. Browsing around i see tradeex is selling M96 actions with new barrels in 6.5x55, http://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/swedish-m96-barreled-receiver-65x55--

At $125 it's a price i can work with.

Since the cartridge (6.5x55) is rimless, similiar pressures and lengths, is it fesibile to put this barrel on the 1908 action? Would any modification need be done to the bolt and extractor? I believe it should fit since they are both large ring mausers, but would it all work smoothly in the end?

at one time I have seen 7x57 barrels at marstar .

the 6,5x55 barrels at tradeex will be small ring mauser barrels . you need to find out if yours is a small ring , or large ring .

if it is a large ring your sol .

if it is a small ring it could be as simple as bolting it on , setting up the headspace and away you go .

one option you could try with the 7x57 barrel is fire lapping

Try an ad in the EE. Someone may have a barrel from a M1908 that was removed when the rifle was sported.
