Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this topic.

I have a mauser bolt action on a browning stock. It is great condition.

I am looking to trade/sell it to get a new rifle. I inherited it from a family member who was military.

Does anyone have knowledge on the value of such a rifle? I believe it is a 30 06 or a .308. It does not have a calibre marking I can see with the stock on.

I am taking it in to my local gun shop to get an opinion next week. I am trying to get some idea of its value before I do.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge, new shooter here.

Thanks

no specific knowledge of Mausers, look at the barrel the calibre should be stamped on it, I am sure you will get some help on Mauser info.

Photos would really help.
Browning made sporting rifles using FN Mauser commercial actions - but these are well marked.

If it is a Mauser 98, it is a great action and would be worthy of keeping.
If the barrel isn't stamped or marked, it could very well be a replacement.
Photos would help us along here.

update to my question

Thanks again.

It is stamped model 98. serial is 2829

I cant find the caliber so, as you mentioned, it may be a replacement barrel?

Although I signed up for a membership, it isnt allowing me to post attachments yet. So when that gets sorted out, I will post pics.

I am wondering what the worth of such a rifle would be (ballpark)?
Also, I have an extra Mosin Nagent stamped 1943 that im trying to find a value of?

I still am unsure of either rifle's caliber?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Or it could be a mil-surp. They weren't marked either.

Guessing that this may be it.
A lot of stocks were made, after WW ll, for the influx of surplus rifles. Companies like Reinhardt-Fajen and Bishop did some nice work. When you say it is a "Browning" stock, what makes you say that? Is the buttplate marked Browning? If so, it could be a Browning plate only.
As wjt said, it could be a military surplus rifle in any chambering. A guess might be 7.92x57 or more commonly known as 8 mm Mauser.

It sounds about right. I will try to get pics posted this week and get some opinions.

Yes, the buttplate is marked Browning. Also, the butt has a shape similar to many other Browning stocks I have seen online, like a cheek rise on the end.

I believe you are correct, I got quite a few 7.92x57 boxes of ammo with my collection.

Thanks

You may have a Milsurp in a Browning Hi-Power (wood) dress. Basically, the early H-P were FN "commmercial" version of the K98 action. The later ones were the "advanced" development of the same action and were called Surpreme, but they still fit the badding pattern.
Pics would be really helpful to determine for sure what you have.

We need detailed pictures of the actual action because your description is nothing close from the original FN/Browning action.

Success. Please Help!

Jeez. what a great hunting rifle. Why in the world do you need a new one?

Figure out the calibre and buy a box of cartdiges.

Ha thanks,

I have a few... I have my eye on a new one. Need cash, this gun needs to be appreciated by someone else. I think its a 30.06. Going to the gunsmith tomorrow.

Appreciate the comment.

Karabiner 98, aka a K98. Looks like WW2 issue as it has the Nazi eagle stamped into it. Just guessing though as I really don't know much about K98.

Far from original, sporterized. Originally it would have looked something like this...
