Mauser C-96:ammo question

Someone at the last gun show in Ancaster tell me that he is using 7,62X25 ammo in his C-96 and it works well.
Anyone can tell me if it's true?
After all there is not much of the differences between 7,62 and 7,63X25....

From what I remember the 7.62X25 is a pretty high pressure round made for SMG's especially the Czech surplus stuff. I don't know how well the older C-96 would hold up to it firing numerous rounds. I had a CZ-52 and there was alot of muzzle flash and recoil when shooting the Czech stuff.
 
I patched up a guy who was running 7.62x25 through a C-96. The first 4 shots were a bit sparky but worked alright. The 5th one blew the gun up and sent the bolt back into his skull. Vitreous humor sort of looks like jello.

My understanding is that the clever Russians, who had been on the receiving end of 7.63 Mauser recognized it as a pretty good cartridge and adopted it dimensionally. But with higher pressures. So one could use 7.63 Mauser just fine in a Tokarev, but someone using 7.62X25mm in a Mauser would soon blow it up. I've had a guy at a gunstore tell me he uses it, but I wouldn't. And "Cartridges of the World" seems to agree.

I've seen .223 Rem cases trimmed down and resized to run 7.63 bullets. They fellow doing it knew what he was doing and running it on a powder charge that pretty much just farted the bullets downrange.

Yeah, absolutely. That is what I do. BUT, you gotta find 7.62x25mm cartridge cases that are actually brass. Nearly all 7.62x25 ammo that I've seen is steel cased and berdan primed. Now, could one pull the bullets, dump the powder and reload? I don't know enough about reloading to know if it's a good idea to use normal reloading dies on steel cases...

I've bought Starline 7.62x25 brass. Bullets are harder to come by.

My understanding is that the Tokarev pistol is built like a tank and it is -- literally -- impossible to stuff enough powder into a 7.62x25 case to harm one. There is a regular contributor to the usenet group rec.guns named Clark Magnusson who has experimented at length with Toks, Mausers and CZ52s; I am quoting his results.

If a C96 is in good shape AND if both the recoil spring and the hammer spring are newly replaced, then it is also pretty safe with 7.62x25. (Both springs must be replaced because both serve to absorb the recoil.) I still wouldn't use it full zoot. While the original Mauser 7.63x25 was a very hot cartridge, modern commercial loads have been downgraded as a concession to the guns' age.

The Czech CZ52, bizarrely enough, has a reputation for good engineering and toughness that is totally belied by the facts -- its roller-bearing-delayed design cuts so deeply into the chamber sides that it has been known to blow up with anything even slightly over standard loads.

Having said all that, let me assure you I really have no idea what I'm talking about. This is just stuff I've read on the internet. I have two broomhandles and I have never fired either one. Too chicken. :runaway:

Well,-because I'm reloading almost all calibers I shoot,will anyone can tell me which powder to use?I was thinking about X-700,but I'm open for suggestions. Also,I think,the 7,62mm bullets can be use for this cartridge.
Correct me,if I'm wrong...
 
I've been reloading with either 700x or Titegroup. I don't have my notes here, but I'm pretty sure I was putting in around 4.2 grains to barely cycle the action. I used to be at a "centre-fire lead-only" range so I was always scrounging around for lead bullets. In a pinch, Speers .308 "Plinker" bullets work. I've been told .32 ACP bullets can used.
 
As an owner of a C-96 , For heaven sakes "DO NOT USE 7.62 X 25 Tokarev Ammo",not matter the condition. Unless you want to blow up your gun ,and turn it into a couple hundred dollars worth of spare parts , then by all means go for it. The difference between the the 30 Mauser and the 7.62 x 25 is night and day, and were made at different times. From the stats below you will find major difference in the CUP

Wow! That says it all and I gladly retract my earlier comment that Tok ammo might be okay in a Mauser.
