Can someone explain what the inlay 6” back from forend tip is on this old Mauser sporting rifle is. And what it’s purpose may be. I’ve seen it on a few old rifles but am unsure what it’s called.

It is an escutcheon plate. The forend is secured to the barrel with a cross bolt - a little flat sliding bar. Push it out to free the forend. It is likely captive, and will not separate from the stock. You will see these on muzzleloaders, and some double and single barreled breechloaders.

Outstanding. Thank you tiriaq!
