Mauser k98 ammo help???

I was debating buying one. But every site that sells the rifle has no ammo. It's a 8mm Mauser I believe. Is there a substitute? What do others do?
 
there a awesome gun, actually its my favorite rifle, wish i could afford another one, if you got the money and want one you should get one, ammo is usually available but right now it seems its sold out every wheres ive looked but i would think that dealers would be getting more ammo in soon,
 
No substitute for the ammo unfortunately. Lever Arms is selling Yugoslavian Surplus 900rds for 500$ (berdan primed so primers could be bad, its corrosive, and also needs special tools to reload) also I have never bought or used this ammo before so I can't speak to its quality

Ammo is no issue, but more affordable stuff (above post ^) is just out right now. It will be back soon. I typically find best results with the Prvi Partisan 8mm ammo, $21.95 a box which isn't bad for commercial stuff.
 
K98 is not a Red Rifle, but I digress. Ammo should be fairly easy to find at just about any well stocked gun shop. 8mm Mauser has been used in literally millions of firearms and demand is reasonable for it. That Prvi Partisan ammo is usually pretty darn good stuff and you can't beat $22/box of twenty.
 
I can often find commercial ammo in local stores when I choose to look. There are several manufacturer's to choose from. However hand loading is your best bet. Surplus ammunition comes up again and again. Keep your eye out for it.
 
Ya I didn't realize you would find this at normal hunting shops like bass pro. Just check there site they have core loks etc. I just assumed it was a surplus ammo caliber only and was looking down those channels only.

Nah, 8mm is very popular. Privi Partizan stuff is loaded hotter than most North American stuff, and your K98 can handle that. I'd suggest Privi for that reason, among others.
 
reload is the only answer for 8mm! cut your 30-06 brass down and never look back. Ammo here is stupidly scarce. Last batch i saw was at an old gun show in the fall, ended up only being 3boxes of priv ammo for 30$ a box.
Bullets are almost as hard to find. Try not to limit yourself to one weight and size, the chances i find more than 2boxes of a hornady 170gr back to back are about the same as winning the lotto
 
OH! STAY AWAY FROM THAT 50'S YUGO SURPLUS JUNK! Corrosive, and the stuff I used expanded in the chamber so much that it was a task just to get the bolt open. I found 8 boxes at a gun show for only $10 each and I passed it up, that's how bad it was.
