I just got a front sight hood for my kar98K, and I am trying to figure out how it is mounted. Would I need to cut any grooves or does it just clamp on to the front sight post?

Is the front sight base already grooved for a front sight hood? If not, you probably have an early K98. The early K98's didn't have grooves cut for hoods, and therefore didn't wear hoods. Later K98's had the grooves cut.

My Steyr Mauser is 1944 vintage and has grooves with a Indent in the middle to set the Hood into. Those Mauser sight covers also fit the front sights of the CZ and BRNO's.Fits my BRNO 2e perfectly.

"...Mine is a 1940..." That's not a bad thing. Your rifle was made before the QC got iffy and the plants were bombed regularly. RAF Bomber Command couldn't find their buttocks with both hands in 1940.

so I have a sight hood comming from the states as we speak that isn't going to work! blast. i wish i had read this 2 days ago. anybody in need of a hood?
