Mauser Mod 98 CE 44 code

Personally I'd never shoot it again. Why bother weighing the risks. A k98k isn't rare, if on gotta shoot one, get a different one. But I think tossing it in a stock for display is a good idea. Especially if a family gun.

I'd clean it with an oily rag. Nothing more. Id look for a Norweigian stock with bands and then eBay a follower and spring.

Does anyone here remember my blowing up a M98 thread? That thing was burnt to a crisp at some point in it's life. The previous owner had the springs replaced and was using it as a hunting rifle for years.

I'm not saying to shoot this, I probably wouldn't risk it myself, but the M98 action is extremely strong and forgiving. I also agree with bearhunter's assessment of the heat damage being minimal to the bolt/receiver area. It doesn't have that scaly burnt badly look to it but some of the barrel does though. I also agree with CanadianAR. There just isn't much point in risking one's life when you can go buy a shooter grade K98k for 500 bucks or even less if you're patient.

Personally I would restock it and hang it on the wall. Clean it with oil and maybe some bronze wool and a brass casing to scrape off the thicker rust if you want. Not sure if that would make it look a whole lot better. It's never going to look really nice again no matter what you do.

Thanks for the input all.
I'm leaning toward not attempting to get it shooting. I've been told I ' clean up well ' and while certain scars may be dashing...no thanks.
As I said; 2 generation's played soldier with it, it's all it's good for.
I already have a 1914 Danzig sporter I can got hunting with.

This one has a far cooler 'back story', that is good enough for this fella.
Anyone finds they have an excess stock; remember me, and of course I'll pay fair price.
Ciao Tok

Damn I like your rifle range ...no "berms" to mess up the scenery just lot & lots of unspoiled "distance".

Thanks. That is actually at my Mom's. after Dad passed we just left the Lead Sled where it was...might as well have ' A tea ' when going out to sight in rifles. Actually, it's about 3 miles north of the Med Hat R & R range...which is great. Can stop through when the pistols get an outing as well.
The 'Rock' is about 15' below the crest of a hill; 350 yds out, about the size of a flour sack and made of chalk...white puff for marking hits & no sparks.
