I have inherited a mauser rifle. It has had a lot of work done to it at one time. Sporter stock, timmey trigger, and re- barreled to 30--06. Had it to the range and it shoots less than a inch out of my lead sled. It has a safety on the right side that is safe when in the raised position and fires in the lower position. When empty the bolt will not close unless you push the mag plate down. On the left side there is a switch that reads on in the upper position and off in the lower position. it has to be in the middle positon to remove the bolt. just wondering what is the purpose of this switch. any info would be great . I love the gun just little baffled about this switch

I think you inherited a Springfield rifle, not a Mauser.
The "switch" is the bolt release/magazine cutoff. When it is "On" the rifle will feed from the magazine; "Off" and it is a single loader. Middle position, the bolt comes out.
