Hi all I bought a barrel and stock from one of our members recently, anyhow they are both in great shape and I plan on useing them in my Mauser sporter project.
So yesterday I tried to fit the stock to the action, and the darn action wont fit! This is a M98 stock the rifle is a Syrian Mauser (made by the chechs I think) The big problem is the magezinehousing/trigger guard part is longer than that of the stock's inletting or whatever it's called.
I must stress that I do not implie that this is the sellers fault. I can see that If it wasnt for that part being to short it would have been a perfect fit.
Is this a known problem with these rifles? What can I do to correct this?

Mmmm, Mauser 98s all the same but all different.
You'd better find out from the seller exactly which model it was inletted for i.e. which action he had in it.
There are LOTS of different actions of M98s, some slightly longer for 30-06, the standard in 8x57, the intermediate for some South American 7x57s and the short action for 308.
Who knows, you may be able to have the stock altered since it's too small.
If it was too long it would be very difficult but it appears you simply need to remove the right amount of wood.
Find a stock maker or gunsmith who does this sort of thing and see what can be done.
I guess you have to ask the big question.....is it worth it?
You might be able to get a nice semi-finished walnut stock for the price of the inletting.
You can always put this one away for another project.
BTW, which cal are you chambering it too?

Thanks for the advice
It's currently in 8x57 but got a parker-hale barrel for it in 7x57.
As soon as the right funds are available I will fit the barrel and a stock, either this one I have if the gunsmith can fit it somehow or a tupperware stock for the timebeing. The plan was to get a really fancy stock later on.
I want to go all out on this rifle, It will cost more than a new gun but it's something I always wanted.

You lucky dog!!
7x57 rocks!!:)
I'm presently trying to line up a barrelled action for myself in the venerable 7mm.

Action Too Long

Your action might be Yugoslavian, or the Czech early models. Have you checked the receiver size is it the same size as the stock cut out? I have some Yugo actions and they are just a bit shorter than standard Mauser actions. I have run across Yugo actions that are normal and others that are just a bit shorter. I was told that some were Mauser actions with Yugo crests, and others were built from scratch in Yugoslavia. If anyone has something to add, step in and correct me if I am wrong. I am currently waiting for The Mauser Book, third addition from Milarm. I am curious as to what it has to say about them. Yugoslavia refurbished German Mausers after the war and ground off most of the German markings and marked the guns with "PREDUZECE 44" (Factory 44) Most still retain "Mod. 98" on the left rear of the receiver.
You should have a good 7X57 when it is completed. I have about ten military and commercial firearms in 7X57. I like the caliber and I can handle the recoil. Anything more than that cripples me.
Thanks
Albayo
