I have been thinking about getting a WWII era Mauser but I just dont know what I should be looking for. I checked out Marstar's info on post war Yugo remanufactured Mausers but I would rather have the waffenampt markings.

Any advice would be very helpful.

If you want the WaA's you will either need to get a Bolshevik captured one or a bringback, which will cost you. If you just want one for shooting, id recommend getting a captured one.

In doing some more research I found this website htt p://psmilitaria.50megs.com/guns.html . It seams they have lots of russian capture K98 with waffenampt markings. however they state there are No cleaning rods or lock screws (whatever that means).

Can I really go wrong spending $375??

For just a shooter, you basically have two choices that you will see with any regularity, Russian Capture or Yugo refurb.

The Russian Captures are a bit cheaper, generally still have the German manufacturer markings and waffens. Downsides are that they are a real mixmash of parts and the stocks have been coated with shellac. Also, the bores are often in rougher condition.
Yugo refurbs are usually in better shape in regards to the bore and stock. They usually have more matching original parts but have had parts replaced that needed it (barrels for example) and then they are forcematched to the reciever serial. Downside of them is that they have usually been scrubbed of German markings and are pricier. Both are great shooter examples of K98's, nothing wrong with them.

Besides these two choices, vet bringbacks with matching bolts or non-matching bolts are out there but you don't see them very often. In addition, they command a premium price now.

Don't worry about the lack of cleaning rod or lock screws. They don't effect functionality of the rifle at all. You can buy replacements if you want off the board here or EBay. Jean at P&S is great to deal with. Can't go wrong there.....

The Russkies took off these extraneous parts and melted them down when they refurbed these K98's. At least that is my understanding...

You could post a WTB ad in the EE. Askd for an east German Refurb with matching numbers and WaA's intact. Best option going and should run about $500 or so.

Good for you! I think that these are very good value for the money. Lots of history behind them as well! Take care and congrats!:)

Well I took the plunge and bought a russian capture K98 from Jean at P&S.

I'm pretty excited

I picked one up from him earlier this week. I was the first person to get one from the shipment.

Have you recieved it yet? If so what kind of shape is it in? how does it shoot? what kind of ammo are you using?
