Any of you can help would be great. I just got a m1908 Mauser on trade. It has a sliding type side safety witch is very loose. Kind of flops around on its own. Not what I would call a safe safety. Do any of you know what could be wrong with it?
I am kinda lost here as I have no local gun smiths. Any help would be appreciated

By sliding type do you mean attached to the trigger? If so, its either the arm has lost some or all of its tension against its detent, or has come loose inside of the trigger group. Either one is probably bad for you as I assume that your not capable of studying, diagnosing, and repairing (not an insult as most aren't). There are a couple of gunsmiths in Cranbrook that should be able to help you.

No offence taken. I am trying to remove the trigger group as we speak but this thing is stubborn. The floor plate won't even budge. I will keep working at it I suppose. This rifle just arrived today. A bit of a let down as this issue was not mentioned when we made the deal. Thanks for the heads up about the gunsmith in cranbrook

Got it stripped down. Looks like the tension is gone against the ball, guess I'm looking at getting a new trigger. Anyone know where to get a new trigger group with safety for a k98?

Hi there, I'm pretty sure your rile already has an after market trigger of some sort. A 1908 mauser would originally have a wing type safety on the rear of the bolt. Not sure how this might help you, but thought I should stick my nose in anyhow. Good luck with your repair,..... Catnip.

Thanks for your help, ended up ordering a bold optima. Also lightly peened the safety to create a bit of friction against the ball.

It could be an aftermarket trigger/safety, but not necessarily. Tradeex has sold hundreds or maybe thousands of M96 & M98 mausers with aftermarket side safeties attached to the factory trigger. I have 3 of them in my safe. European - especially Swedish and German gunsmiths seemed to do this to a great many rifles 50+ years ago.

Replacing the existing trigger/side safety with a Timney w/side safety is usually quite simple mechanically, the issue is that both safeties are not always in the same position relative to the wooden stock and sometimes you need to open the channel cut in the wood to accommodate for the lever of the new safety and it is not always pretty.
