I bought this mauser sporter and when I bought it I was told it was a small ring M98. That proved correct however when I converted it to 6.5x55 Swede the smith told me it had large ring threads. So I have been trying to figure out what this rifle is. It was chambered for 8x57 when I bought it. Bore .323 but based on the markings I think it should have been .318. I assume it is a military convert but I don't know. Any ideas? Also how strong are these actions? Now it is a Swede I'm having problems with it. Factory S and B ammo gives me a sticky bolt. I want to hand load for it but at this point I'm not certain what I have and why I have a problem. Gas ports on the bolt are smaller than the other M98s I have. Any ideas?

It's likely a Kar98a from WWI and earlier. A lot of them were made by Erfurt. They were very popular post-war for sporterization because of the lightweight small ring design, and because the military barrel had a sporter-style contour rather than the usual military Mauser steps. Bore diameter would have been for the .323" 'S' cartridge.

This is a guess, because I can't really see enough from your photos to make a determination. If you're having problems with factory ammo, it's likely related to the new barrel/chamber.
