I just bought a German Mauser 98K and it is stamped 7.62 on the barrel. Does this for certian mean i can fire .308 win out of it?

This is why I bought this rifle to be able to shoot 308 out of it.

Does it have Hebrew markings, and 7.62 branded into the butt in addition to the mark at the breech? The Israelis converted a large number of K98K rifles to 7.62mm. They are generally fine shooters, and yes, you can shoot .308 ammunition in one.

Is the 7.62 on the barrel or on the top of the receiver?

If it's on the receiver and has star fo david proof marks, it's .7.62 NATO (.308). If it's only on the barrel, it might also be in .30-06.

Its only on the barrel. Its from Pullens Gunsmithing and he says its .308win. So i just thought I would check. 308 or 30-06 is fine for me. Ill get dad to check with him when he goes down to pick it up.

Rifles with original German stocks have "7.62" burned into the heel of the rifle stock for identification and to separate the re-chambered Kar98ks from the original 7.92 mm versions of the weapon then in service or held in reserve, though some 98k rifles were fitted with new, unnumbered beech stocks of recent manufacture. All of these converted rifles were proof-fired for service.

Thats from wikipedia. So I guess the 98k i am buying is going to be .308win....cant freakin wait till next weekend!!!

Does it look like this?

Like the top one just with 7.62 written on the barrel.

The vast majority of Norwegian rework K98k's like the one pictured are in .30-06. I have heard that 7.62 NATO ones do exist, but I've never seen one in person.

Don't take the gunsmiths word for it being in 7.62 NATO/.308 Win without checking it yourself or getting someone else to.

If it is like the one in Hitzy's upper photo, it is not .308; the one in the lower photo is. Note that the receiver ring of the Norwegian conversion has been notched to clear the bullet of the .30-06 cartridge. Make darn sure what the calibre is before you fire it.
Incidentally, the Wikipedia entry quoted uses the term "rechambered". That is silly, you cannot rechamber a 7.92 barrel to 7.62; you rebarrel. Israeli Mausers retained in 7.92 seem to have grooves ringing the bolt handle, so there is an easy way of determining calibre by touch alone.

Surely the gunsmith has headspace guages for both the 30/06 and 308 around, and if not, rounds for them - and knows how to use them. You don't trust the Gunny to make this simple determination?

Well as the 98k comes in both 30-06 and 308 but is stamped with 7.62 on the barrel one needs to find out what this rifle shoots. Ill call him today to make damn sure its 308.

talked to the gunsmith today. He said that it for surely is 308 because 30-06 wont fit in the action. He is going to remeasure it (caused we asked him too).

Anyway, its all good now:rockOn:

The Israelis did a 7.62 (308) conversion and was marked similar to the above photo. As mentioned the Norwegian Haer (Army) 7.62 was in fact a 30-06.
