Hello CGN,
I just acquired a Vergueiro 1904/39 it is beautiful with all matching numbers save for the cocking piece and a missing cleaning rod. I have a few dummy rounds so I put them on a stripper clip, fed them in and found that the bolt would not close! The bolt turns about 5 degrees if that and stops, I then cleaned the chamber best I could and ran oil patches through the barrel and still same problem. Does anyone have any advise or have you incountered this before.
It is the 8mm conversion, they didn’t “x” out the old 6.5 mark bit it’s shortened with the front sight protectors also have the vent hole drilled and the notch cut out of the receiver for the 8mm

Sounds as if the bolt might be uncocked. Can you post a picture of the bottom of the bolt, out of the action?


Also suggest taking it to the range with real rounds an see if the dummy rounds maybe too long.

Do you see any marks on dummy rounds around neck &shoulder? Had the same issue, turned out to be small obstruction in neck/shoulder area, I ended up polishing it out with a small stone mounted in 10in.x 3/8" shaft in cordless drill, he careful and go slow! ! It was most likely a sm. Piece of shell caseing, it was really stuck in there!! let us know what you find.
 
Try some live rounds and look for marks, Mark entire neck and shoulders area with marking pen. If that tells you anything then go from there, you might get lucky and be able to remove obstruction by sharp pointed brass tool?? If no luck let me know, I can loan you what worked for me, if you are interested and can return it! It dosnt sound like a decock issue, if it is not cocked you would not be able to even start bolt into reciever I believe!!
 
Be VERY careful in dissembling the bolt!!!
They make a Gordian knot look like child's play.
Almost like trying to do the Rubics cube blindfolded.

There is a very good video as well as a description for taking apart the Vergueiro bolt. Google it just by the name.

I ran across one of those last fall in Victoria with a matching number bolt but with the WRONG bolt head. They can easily be broken during assembly. Sarco in the US was the only place that the proper 8x57 conversion bolt heads were available. I don't know of anyone else that might have them now.
 
Hey! Here are some pictures of the bolt, I believe it is not the issue as it carries the round onto the chamber then wont close on the round. I think and dread a chamber issue. I am about to colour a couple of my dummy rounds (which are just primerless empty reloads) ( a little beat up for the M95M) and see if I can see any obvious marks on them

Bohrok, a live round, or an empty with a projectile seated will tell you a lot more, with mine an empty didn't really show much, the empty shell was too flexible. Also if you Mark the shell base at what would be 3 o'clock it will tell you where racially the problem is, it was very hard to see even with a strong light! You might try to probe it with something. I am going to get one of those cheap Chinese endoscopes for my phone wish I had it back then. Good luck!!!!
 
It's hard to tell from your pic but does the base of an 8x57 round fit onto the bolt face when the rim is under the extractor. Your bolt face looks a bit small.
 
I got it to go! It’s still sticky though. When I was trying a coloured casing to see where in might be binding it went and seems to be getting smoother the more I cycle it, I am thinking it was just a lot of crap built up in the chamber and when I ran the cleaning rod and oil through the bore and chamber it loosened up the build up in there and the round pushed it free. I think I will keep cleaning the bore and chamber some more and see if I can get it nice and smooth. I have heard that these can have sticker bolts, no idea if this is true or not. Thank you everyone for you advise and help!!!

Good for you. When I encounter this sort of thing, I take some "0" steel wool, wrap it loosely around a jag, soak it in solvent and carefully scrub out the chamber. Some folks use brass scrubbing pads and the Swedes used to use some sort of excelsior material they wrapped around a special jag, made to clean out the chamber. That old/dried out cosmoline can get very hard and glue itself to the metal surface.

I like that idea, I think I will give that a try tonight and see if I can get things working smoother. Thanks!
 
Hi. Just wandering if you are using a live round? If makes a difference if a projectile/bullet is in there. Yes that Cosmo can get really hard with age!!! Good luck with your new weapon.hope she is a straight shooter.
