Mauser wtf?!

not all mauser bolt shrouds and fireing pins are interchange able . has it worked in the past? or is this a new to you rifle? does the fireing pin protrude from the fireing pin hole when it is in the fired position? what kind of mauser ?
 
Have you ever fired it?
do you have another firing pin to compare it to?

With the bolt out, you should be able to twist it into the closed/fired position with your hands. Then check and see if the pin protrudes
 
As mentioned should be 1 of 2 problems. Cocking piece/Shrould neeeds to be turned colckwise further or the Firing pin protrusion is not far enough.
Remember there are some different Mauser bolts. Turkish 1903 is shorter than 1938 Turk, but probably wont close completely in your 98 action. The GEW and 98K are interchangeable as should be modern sporters like yours.
Unless your bolt has been modified someway?Has to be the firing pin protrusion.

When the bolt is in that condition, does the firing pin project from the boltface?
It should.
If it doesn't, there is a problem.
 
well have you personally shot this rifle before ? or is it new to you? chances are it could be the wrong length firering pin. or the firing pin tip is broken off. can you post pictures of the fireing pin? and what is the fireing pin overall length ? can you post a picture of the front of the bolt also?

As mentioned, HAVE YOU SHOT THE RIFLE BEFORE or IS IT NEW TO YOU? This is important information that you should have included as it makes a difference in diagnosing your problem.

With the position of the fireing pin sear in the pictures you show, there are two possibilities to check out.

1. A firing pin from a short bolt has been substituted for a long bolt one.

2. The firing pin is broken.

If you want some help, take the firing pin assembly out of the rifle and post some pictures.

Examine the firing pin tip to see if it is rounded and not broken.

To check for a short firing pin, put the firing pin assembly beside the bolt, and see if the firing pin seems to be the same length. The difference is about 4 mm in length between the short and long bolts.

Also, take the firng pin assembly out to the bolt, and clean the inside of the bolt to see that all crap and dirt is out of it.

@Egg: right now, you have at least three of the best guys in the country trying to help you.

Help them by giving them the information they need so they can diagnose the problem correctly.

Offhand, I can think of at least six things which could be wrong.

Do you get ANY firing-pin indentation on the rounds?

Will it shoot a PENCIL?

What ammo are you trying to use? I have some ammo here that won't work in most Mausers. It was sold surplus in Canada several years ago. Checked it out carefully. It is WW2 ammo for the high-speed guns on the ME-109: very deeply recessed primers. Most firing-pins won't even reach far enough.

The bolt safety is not in the middle position. I can see that in your pics. I can also see the bolt sleeve is not in all the way, you need another turn. Take it apart, check the parts, and reassemble from scratch using the instructions in the link.

She needs to go another quarter turn. Bolt sleeve should be inline with bolt handle (figure 6 in link below).
Take it apart, reassemble with safety lever in middle position, screw on bolt body until it "clicks" into position.

Looks pretty much the same as mine.
Id say ou didnt assemble the bolt 100%
Also make sure the tip actually goes through the hole in the bolt.
 
put the cocking piece on the firing pin .drop it in the bolt in the fired position . it should protrude out the fireing pin hole ? then take the cocking piece off and drop the firing pin in again with out the cocking piece. does it protrude?

Cocking piece on- no protrusion.
Cocking piece off- tip protrudes.
 
you have the wrong firing pin its for the shorter action like the m48. put a post in the equipment exchange looking for a k98 fireing pin or give your local gunsmiths a call.
