Hey all, does anyone here have one of these? I just got one, now I haven't loaded the gun with real ammo as of yet, but I did load it with snap caps and heres the thing, when you chamber the first round the second falls out of the bottom of the gun where you load them in. This is extremely frustrating. Does this happen to anyone else, is it the gun, or is it just because I'm using snap caps? Help please

I do not have a Maverick, but I do have a Mossberg 590 (same idea). I bought some snap caps to practice with and had the exact same problem. I was worried when I went to the range, but I have not had a lick of problems with it from that.

RePete has a set of dummy rounds that he made up out of spent shells that work slick as s**t when we were testing mine with a new mag follower.

I have a Crazzy 88 and use snap caps, and have never had this problem, are you sure you are using the right Gauge of snap cap?

The only issue I have with this shotgun is that it is a light shotgun, and I personaly found the pistol grip option way to painfull.

I'm sure the snap caps are the right guage they work fine in my 870, and to be honest I wouldn't even consider the pistol grip, wouldn't work well for hunting...

Most snap caps for shotguns are for releasing hammer springs on over unders and side by sides. They often lack a very usable rim. They are not meant to be used for function testing. I agree that actual "DUMMY" rounds or live rounds will work fine.

cheers Darryl

My Maverick 88 does not fail to function as it should with real ammo. I have not tried any snap caps in it. Since it only has a pistol grip, I can say that with 3" slugs, it is one nasty beast!

I forgot to add that my snap caps do have some pretty beat up edges around the rims...yah dummy rounds would prob' work much better, and have a better weight to them also.

Since we're talking about the Mav. 88 how nice a gun are they?

How do they compare to the Moss. 590?

Are they strong, good for camping and horse back?

Thanks,

Jeff

The Maverick 88 is basically a budget version of the Mossberg M500 series action. There's a few differences, like a single action bar, cross-bolt safety instead of a tang safety. They also have more plastic parts, including the trigger guard.

They aren't tanks like the M500, so I wouldn't go trying to beat a tree down with them, but they're reasonably robust, and I haven't had any problems with mine. For the price, I'd say they're very good value, and should be fine for normal camping use. I don't know much about horses, but as long as your horse doesn't step on it, I can't see any issues.

Maverick 88s also take the Mossy 500 barrels and accessories...except the forearm part.
Also the Mav' uses a double action bar...the earlier ones used a single.

The Mossy 590 is a military tested Shotgun, and is much stronger, but you do pay for this quality. :D

I hope your talking about wilderness camping and not your local campground. I can just imagine the place if you bring along your Maverick 88 and have it sitting on the picnic table. LOL ;)

I just bought one to replace a Winchester someone wanted. I have a rebuilt shoulder with screws holding me together and I love shooting the 88. No pain at all
