Hey all. I have a plain-jane Mav 88 with a bead sight that I would like to upgrade in a few ways:

1 - I want to add ghost ring sights. Has anyone had any experience with the ATI heat shield with the integrated ghost rings? I realize that pin-point accuracy is rather moot with a shotgun, but I just want to know how the heat shield and sights hold up in the long haul. Really, I would like to avoid the heat shield altogether if there was an upgrade available to attach some decent sights to the gun, but I do not know of any.

2 - some kind of barrel attachment that will provide a rail to mount a red dot. I have a cheap-o dovetail red dot, so it might be fun to kick the crap out of it with some 3" slugs, just to see how quick I can break it. I have seen a few attachments out there, but prices vary pretty wildly, and I am always looking for "most bang for the buck" as such an attachment would be handy even after I'm done violating the red dot.

3 - any kind of aftermarket stock with pistol grip. I see ATI has a few nice ones for the 88, but not a single one that provides a rail mount up top, which is not surprising given the design of the gun. Anyone know of any decent stocks for the 88 that provide a mount on top? If not, is there a kit available that the average Joe can fix a mount to an 88 without a drill press?

Thx.

I havent had any personal experience with the ATI heatshield/GRS but have heard they are cheap plastic non-adjustable sights that become misaligned when bumped. Mounting a red dot on the barrel might be tough unless its past the forend with something like a 3 or 4 rail barrel clamp. Check e-bay for wideview see-under mounts fo the Mossberg 500, I threw one on my Maverick and it worked pretty good. It was something like 20 bucks after shipping and was later made into an SKS drill and tap mount. I'm not sure what you mean by a "mount up top" on a stock? Like the NEA AR adaptor for the CZ858, and the Mesa stock adaptors? The ATI stocks arent too bad but not top quality. Fit was quite good on the ones Ive used, I'd go for the pistol gripped full stock (speedfeed style) over the top folder.

That's too bad. I read a few reviews on Amazon. Confirmed by many.

Exactly like the Mesa adapters. Never heard of them before you mentioned it, so I checked it out and they have a saddle style picatinny rail mount that attaches to their telescoping stock instead of to the receiver. Better option in my opinion, but it doesn't look like they make one for the Mav 88.

I had my Maverick set up exactly they way you want to have yours.

S&J Long Rail, TROY folding battle sights, and an ATI stock.
If your not afraid to drill a couple holes in the receiver it is a pretty solid setup.

Nice setup. Can't do the S&J long rail though. Costs more than the shotgun. And I have no drill press, so drilling and tapping are not an option (no experience doing that, either. I'd hate to s**t the bed on that and trash the receiver).

We have Lots of shotgun stocks & accessories, HERE.

Hey HiCal, do you have an item like this:

870 See Thru Optic mount

...but purpose built for the Mav 88?

As far as the rail goes theres a few companies that make a speed bead type set up it mounts between the receiver and stock just google search for mossberg 500 (since theres more parts available and the 500 and 88 are interchangable) cantilever scope mount id post a link but im on my phone.here my girlfriends shotgun i just finished putting to gether for her

its a 88 as well

Wow, just found the Burris Speed Bead online. That is a nice, elegant solution for the Mav 88. Thanks again for the info Skoal. I'm looking for a dealer now.

EDIT: Seems they don't make a Speed Bead for the Mossberg 500, so unless one of the other model types can be adapted for use on the 88, I guess it's not going to work.

where did you get that awesome heatshield? i would love me one of those.

try it right up against the receiver, mine fits nice.
the idea behind the shield is to protect your hands during sustained rapid fire use/reloading, so it makes sense that its at the end with the action.
but really i put them on for looks....so whatever floats your boat!
longer would be good too, or a shorter barrel..lol, i tried one on my 8.5 grizz....nah too short, ....hatsan mp-a ....yes!

I just picked up a new maverick 88 with a pistol grip, I wish I could cut the barrel a bit so it would be the same length as the mag tube. Would that make it restricted? I just really like the look when the barrel and the tube are the same length. I bought it as a cheap bush gun to beat up, and to save my Winchester 1300 as a safe queen lol. Seems like a pretty solid gun, I'll take it out soon and run some shells through it.

The heat shield is just a ATI universal one and ya i know its on the wrong side but its the wifes shotty and she thought it looked better on the front but its moved to the back now that she has a universal hi vis bead on the front. im probally going to buy anpther heat sheild and tig them together for full barrel length
