Maverick 88 Field shotgun

Hello Shotgun lovers

I just bought a bunch of guns of a nice gentleman. Included in that bunch was a Maverick model 88 pump shotgun. I admit at first I thought "what a turd". It's the first generation with 1 action bar and a fixed 30" full choke no rib. Despite being an older model it was like new. With the 30" barrel it felt like a turd as well.I checked online and right now you can buy a new version of this gun with twin action bars and a 28" vented rib barrel with one removeable choke for $279.00 plus tax.So now I'm thinking ... What am I going to do with this "turd".

So I got to thinking. I only shoot skeet. I had a friend cut the barrel down to 26" and reinstall the bead. I shot 3 rounds of skeet yesterday in windy conditions and 24'd it all three times. Now ... It is a light handy skeet killer .This pump operates smoothly and swings nice.The finish isn't as nice as my bps's or as well made as my old model 12's, ithaca37's or wingmaster's but it will get the job done. I think I will use it as my rain/sleet/snow etc gun ( I shoot no matter what)

Does anybody else like these cheap overlooked guns?
 
There’s something to be said for a cheaply priced 12g that works well and has a use for you, always good to have a reliable beater/truck gun or bad weather gun that you can shoot well.
 
They work great as canoe paddles also in the bad weather :)
I'm sorry but a guy with a handle winchester12 I am having a hard time here seeing the picture with a 88
Like a guy trading his corvette in on a chevette and thinking all is still good because you got to work :(

Well, try getting to work in a foot of fresh snow in -35 in Ottawa in a corvette and you might appreciate the chevette a bit more hahaha.

I remember back in the day people driving their vettes in the winter with studded tires since it was the only car they had
I know I drove my 70 ss454 chevelle in the winter for two seasons for the same reason

To each their own on the 88's. If one likes them cool and if they keep going bang and keeps one shooting all the better
I am old and spoiled and remember buying new wingmasters for under 125 bucks .

I too have a maverick 88. It was part of my gun ownership starter kit, lol. It has served me well. I have never cleaned it and it rarely sees oil and it has never failed.

PS, i treat the rest of my guns properly, this one just doesn't get the care it probably deserves
 
I have plenty of very nice O/U shotguns I shoot. They are probably the best type for skeet.I have a Browning 525 sporting in 410 that I shoot well . I also have an old stevens 311 sxs in 410 that I shoot better.I paid 8 times more for the browning. I guess my point is that I finally have the means to have " better" shotguns and sometimes I'm surprised how much I like the lesser guns.
 
3 rounds of skeet now that’s a test for reliability and durability, it may be a good truck gun that fires 25-50 rounds a yr butt that’s about where it ends .
 
Lots of use for an oogly woogly shotgun that functions well! Besides a truck gun, dirty weather/mud gun it also is a good loaner or backup shotgun for hunting. Hold on to it! You are not going to get much money for it if you sell, but will be happy later when you need it.
