Maverick 88, first impression

I have two Mav's. One is a single action bar and the other has 2. I've put my single arm Mav through Hell and back and never had a problem. I once dropped it 18' out of my treestand (unloaded, locked and encased in a gun sock) after I climbed up. Climbed down and waited for sunrise, unlocked it and not a thing wrong, nothing broken. Damn fine gun for the money. I'm also getting awesome groups with the Brenneke slugs.

I have the field model with 28 inch barrel and love it! For 200 bucks you can't even get a mossberg barrel these days! I've put about 1000 rounds through it and no hiccups!

I've had a 88 for quite sometime ... cost was cheap ... beat it, abused it, let it rust ... several years later had "murdoc" from the board blast it, parkerize and paint it ... like a new gun and hopefully go another dozen yrs. I love my 88 as it brings me ptarmigan and geese all the time ... :D

3000 rounds out of mine till i sold it in perfect working condition.
did all sorts of shooting, sporting clay, duck hunting, and bush carry.

The ONLY downside is the shell won't feed properly if you point the gun straight up. The shell will fall outta the ramp.

supernova;4269004 Where did you find Brennekes in Canada? Are they Brenneke USA or the RIO's from SFRC?[/QUOTE said:
I found a few boxes in Victoria in 1991, in a shop that is now closed... The rest I bought off a CGN member last year, no idea where he got them.

just got one the other day took it out put a few boxes of just plinking 12 ga. threw it and its awesome exactly what i was looking for just a cheap good gun, lots of fun to shoot, and pump a few rounds out and shoot em out the air before they hit the ground so i can trick shoot this thing just as well as a 2000 dollar shotgun so great gun in my book.

I hope you guys have better luck with 'em than I did. Had two go ka-boom on me with out-of-battery discharges.

What do you mean here X-Man? I have a mossberg maverick 88 with an extra full choke ... banged me up some geese today ... love my mossy :D

I bought one of the Mavericks on sale from GR in Kelowna. Mine is still in the mail though... Nice to read the + on it...

For the price I thought it would be a great backpacking shotgun for crawling around the hills in the W.Koots...

fantastc gun .. mossberg 88. for its price... this day and age. i've had mine for many years carry it in my canoe,backpack,snowmachine...etc if you have the knowhow you can add a foldingstock along with the pistolgrip and still keep it unrestricted or worse.only other shotgun i got for that cheap way back in the day is my win. mod 97pump......1932

have to agree here for the price you cant go wrong, I have the pistol grip along with top folding stock on mine and love it, was going to get a rem express but after using my brothers many shells got stuck when extracting the round which I did not like.

I picked one up in the eary 90's 28" vent rib with a fixed modified choke. The only problem I had was the pump broke where the action bar screws in. Had a really hard time finding a replacement (500 ones don't work). Ended up throwing some 5 min epoxy and a new screw on it. Still workin, a little ugly though.

Mine gets abused, and looks it. Its been submerged in pudding like mud, hit the road at 50 kmh, put away literally wet, bottle of wine spillt and soaked through the soft case and stripped the finish off to bare shiny steel. works great though, never an issue through hundreds of slugs/buck and many hundreds of target/bird shot. She lives in my truck or strapped un-cased to the rack on my trike rain or shine. Worth every penny and that wasn't many
