Contemplating the purchase of either a Maverick Model 88 Security Pump or the Mossberg Model 500 Persuader.

See the only difference at this point is the Mossberg holds 8 shells maximum in comparison to the Maverick at 6 shells.

Does anyone have any experience with one or both of these shotguns? Is there a difference in quality between the two?

Thanks for all your responses.

Regards

CT

yeah have you handled a Maverick? They work, but they seem abit cheap and light duty. Have you considered either an 870 or a Nova? In Mossberg I like the 590, but its pricey for what you get.

My roommate just got a 88 security....it's nice and light, has a smooth action and a nice trigger. I don't know if he got lucky and he just got a good one or if they are all that good for the cheap price. But like mentioned earlier it's really light, but that's just what he wants for walking around the bush.

Don't get me wrong, it sure lets you know it's there when you put 3inch slugs through it. However, it aint that bad, has plenty of pad on it and ain't too punishing as long as you don't shoot it prone too much

The Maverick 88 is also available in an 8 shot model. Wholesale Sports stocks them. Item number 210228. $229.95.

Thanks for all the replies, however is there any difference between the two shotguns in quality?

Mossberg owns maverick. Maverick is their 'affordable' brand, and yes there is some difference in quality. Hence the difference in price. However, many many folk have mav's and love 'em. The 500 is, of course, a slightly better shotgun. A little more ruggged, slightly better fit and finish, slightly smoother, etc. Then again some people don't really care or notice a difference.

Both are known to be reliable shotguns.

What's your application? just funning around, are you going to use it for something serious, are you going to beat it up, what are you planning to do with it?

The 88 is not just the 500 "lite", it is an entirely different design and one that was designed from the ground up to be more economical to produce. That means that parts that would be machined and threaded on the 500 are stamped and press fitted on the 88. Parts are thinner and lighter than the 500 to save on materials costs.

It goes to tell you something about just how cheap it is that Mossberg even changed it's brand name to market it rather than call it some new number of Mossberg. Even Remington had the balls to call their new cheapo gun the "710" instead of something like the "Rebel 06made by Remington."

What does this mean in practical terms?

Well... the first thing that you will notice when picking up a Maverick 88 is where the safety is. It's a cross-bolt at the front of the trigger guard. And frankly, I like that. I really, really do. It's not ambidexterous like the 500's thumb switch, but for a right-handed guy, it's right there under the finger in normal readiness position. Very nice placement and a ++ for the Maverick in my opinion. It's a good design feature.

As for reliability, I don't know. Logic dictates that over the long term, it's going to jam more and break more often than the 500. However, I put a bunch of rounds of 2.75" buckshot through one and yeah, felt it a little more than if it was an 870. But not so much so that I felt the $175 difference in price. I had no problems with it with factory ammo. And countless homeowners in the US buy it as a house gun every year. At least enough of them to keep Maverick as a going concern.

I think, if I was to buy a new shottie I would definately consider the Maverick.

Just looking to use for utility.

For hiking, camping and back up during hunting season.

Well mossberg 500 barrels are interchangable with the 88 if you go that route, so you'll likely want to pick up a slug barrel if you're going to use it as 'backup for game' so to speak, but as a truck shotgun and a pack-around, the 88 is a good little gun. But, the mossy is a nicer gun. You'll have to decide if that's important.

the mav 88 is sh*t but a mossberg 590 or a rem 870.
really the mav 88 is allmost as bad as the norinco guns.
bbb

If so then why don't you see countless threads about Mav 88's failing to feed 3in shell, ala the M37 clones? Or why do you see so many 14in bbl 870 clones kicking around? What's that phase 'they can't all be wrong'......

I'm a happy owner of a Maverick 88.

It is a lighter shotgun, and using slugs with a pistol grips that have no shoulder support is simply brutal IMHO. While the original the original stock handles recoil quite nice.

Never had a loading, or firing issue...never had a jam in the approx 500+ rnds I have run through her. I even did pretty good at the local trap range with her...with both the stock 18.5" barrel, and the 24" I picked up for her at a gunshow.

The only part that is not interchangeable with other Mossberg products seems to be the forend grip...which does feel wobbly, but has never binded on me no matter what I do.

I wouldn't compare it to a Norinco product...that's just way off base IMHO.
And besides which it is still made in the USA, you can get parts and service for it, and the price is fantastic.

BTW: Marstar has accessories that will fit them just fine as well (besides the forend grip). :)
