Maverick 88 & Mossberg Persuader

See the only difference at this point is the Mossberg holds 8 shells maximum in comparison to the Maverick at 6 shells.

Does anyone have any experience with one or both of these shotguns? Is there a difference in quality between the two?

Thanks for all your responses.

I had to choose between an 870 and a Maverick and since the gun was to be used in the bush for bear protection with slugs the price difference between the 870 and Maverick was too great. The Maverick was just over $200.00 with taxes.
You can feel it's a light gun especially using 3" magnums so I wouldn't try one handed "Terminator" shooting from the hip. Besides the Maverick looks to be of reasonable quality and it's made in the USA. I guess time will tell.

The pistol grip that came with mine is a Butler Creek one...I was thinking of selling it in the EE section (used once).

Where can I get a "reasonably priced" standard stock to bolt on to my Maverick 88 security pump? That way I can interchange from the pistol grip if I want to.

Well - there's 'standard' and then there's 'standard' - but what about this guy:

Comes with spacers for the 88. Only about 50 bucks. I've used ati stocks on other guns - nothing fancy but they work.

Looks like this may be a winner. Thanks Foxer. The link for ATI says they do not sell retail. I have not contacted them yet, but will they sell direct to end user in Canada?

That would be illegal.

However - you will be quite pleased to know that many fine canadian stores carry their products and import them legally, and no doubt will be happy to take care of your needs.

Marstar is one - i'd also ask SIR and Wholesale sports - there's a tonne of other ones, i don't know who's the cheapest. I have noticed prices do vary tho.

BTW - it's not uncommon for the stock screw to come a little loose after the first few rounds - remember to check it after you've installed it and fired it a little. It's also an idea to use a little loc-tite if it's giving you any greif.

The mav is an aluminum reciever. So you probably don't want to change the stock out for the pistol grip and back every week or anything :)

Actually - now that i think about it - does anyone remember if the minimum purchase thingie applies to stocks? Does a 50 dollar gun stock require an export permit?

I have one of each. I much prefer the mossberg 500. It has a much smoother action, and I prefer the placement of the safety.
The 88 is sometimes hard to pump, not near as smooth as the 500, and I tend to try and use my thumb to take the safety off.. only to realize its not there! the trigger guard safety gets me every time... I forget. Its kind of like trying to find the clutch in an automatic.. oops.. not there!

But the 88 i have is a long barrel for duck hunting.. and its very nice. The 500 is a camp gun and it is by far my favorite. I can switch the barrels... I like the 500 much better. Have I mentiioned i like the 500?

Since they are a supporters...

I don't see the basic black model pistol grip stock on the site, but i bet they have it or can get it. (that camo one's pricey).

The ar-15 style is kinda cool.

I was also thinking it might be good as I'm constantly finding adjustment problems with my Mavericks original Stock length...be nice to have a shotgun that can be quickly adjusted to fit if you go from tac vest, to sweater, to hunting jacket, to t-shirt, etc...or Bikini if you bring a special friend. :)
