Maverick 88. whats going on ??

I bought a Maverick 88 at Cabela's a month ago for $299. The gun cycles very nice and the mechanism seems to mesh well. I'm very happy with it.
Now a couple of my friends have bought one as well. They purchased theirs from another dealer for $229. A difference of $70. bucks. I felt a little jilted till I handled their shotguns. JUNK ! I was surprised at how gritty the action was. It did not cycle like mine at all. There was rougher machining marks in theirs as well. All 3 guns had the same name and outwardly looked the same, but that was it.
What gives ? Are all mavericks made in the same "country,factory"?? The workman ship on mine was far superior. I'm glad now that I paid more and got this shotgun. I would NOT have been happy with the other & I would have returned it. Why was mine built so much better ??
 
I have 2 friends that bought one each. One was smooth and no problems at all..... the other, didn't finish a box of shells before the action seized up and wouldn't cycle. It went back and he picked up a 870. You win some you lose some.

LOL..this sounds exactly what I was saying. I suppose its the way things are.
Take the gun out of the box and cycle it before you hand him your cash.
 
All depends if its Monday morning or Friday afternoon at the factory I suppose. Mine was tight out of the box, but went on to cycle very smooth. Oiling them well and working the action smooths them out in no time.
 
It seems like more and more guns you buy are hobbies instead of finished guns. Get a new gun, cycle action a little, check for wear and rubs and polish those spots or the spots that cause them. Then it's truly your gun.

I don't really mind as I like to tinker on them, but some people expect a little more.
 
You really have to shop around as prices vary a lot on guns....kinda sucks when you paid 30% more than your buddies though!
 
Like others have said, you got a good one I guess. Also a lot of shotguns get better with time and use. I've had ones that seemed a little rough/tight and a year later smooth as butter.
 
the Maverick 88 is a mass produced budget priced shotgun based on the Mossberg.....like many budget firearms , the quality control may not be the greatest , but the shotguns in question will probabley smooth out with usuage as they are generally a pretty good shotty for the money....
