Maverick 88

The newer twin action bar 88's seem to be okay, however, I wouldn't use the older single action bar models for a tomato stake, let alone fire a live shell in it. Had an out of battery detonation that was purely the firearms fault. Broke the action bar and heavily grooved and gouged the interior of the receiver and chamber. Bits & pieces of brass blown out of the action.

For the money, I'd much rather buy a good, used Remington 870 or even a higher end product like the Mossberg 500/590. The Maverick is built to a certain price point. I care too much about my life, hand and eye sight to take another chance on one, even if they've made improvements.

I've been duck hunting with a Maverick 88 for the past 2 years. My buddies have shotguns that cost at least 4 times more but I came home with just as many ducks. Very reliable under harsh conditions and weather......I have no complaints.

Same here ... though I've had mine for closer to 15 years ... still never had an issue with it. Reliability of these guns is outstanding.

I should have mine sometime next week and i will post pictures when it gets here...very much looking forward to getting it.

A Maverick 88 is just a bare bones Mossy 500. Reliability is on par and unless you want to mod it you can't beat the price. If you want to tacti-cool it out or put sights on then get a mossy 500 as it comes drilled and tapped for a rail.

Well at long last it's here....:) And i must say i am very impressed ....this is the first Shotgun i have owned and i am very happy with it, very light and looks quite rugged too....here is a pic.

Forgot to mention this ... a light as these shotguns are, they have a very managable kick to them. I've shot same shell, same day - trading guns with a buddy - and compared my Maverick 88 with a Remington 870 Wingmaster - and the Maverick had considerably less perceived recoil for me.

Here is mine, wrapped up in one of those cheap "stick on" camo sticker kits - it's been on there about 7 years now and needs to be replaced ... gettign a bit frayed and tattered at the seems, faded a bit in some places, but whatever ... it still hunts fine :D. I found it did make a difference for getting the ducks in ... probably doubled our success rate just by wrapping our guns with this stuff vs. leaving them all black and polished. And that clip on Fibre Optic sight at the front is AMAZING!!! Best $15 I ever spent.

Nice IMagius...It is nice to know i can swap out the short barrel with a long one for Geese. the Maverick seems to be a very adaptable Firearm.

I just bought one of these mavericks myself as well, for 220 bucks from Cabela's, it was hard to look at anything else.

I am however, finding it hard to find add ons for it, although im not really sure what I want to add on yet either! I just bought mine 2 days ago though, so i just started my research!

i'm the self proclaimed president of the Maverick Fan Club.

i have the one that came with a 28" barrel and an 18" barrel. takes me 20 seconds to swap them out.

i bought mine to put it to the test. and did i ever.

i've thrown it. i've kicked it. i've dropped it. it's been soaked in mud, water, slush. covered it in sand, gravel, dirt. it's got over 6000 rounds through it so far. i've maybe cleaned it a half dozen times. all i've done to it have been replace the mag spring and install a No-Jam follower. it still looks great and functions better.

My name is FlyingHigh. I love my Mossberg Maverick 88. :D

I am in the same boat as you, i looked at quite a few types of Shotguns but i always seemed to come back to the Maverick...i love it.

Good To know, i have read many reviews and almost all say the same as you that these are tough little Guns...i am very pleased with my Purchase.

Anyone else just get Wholesale And Cabela's flyers? The Mav 88 is $179 at Wholesale and $219 at Cabela's right now, at least in Winnipeg. Just with the long duck barrel though.

179 is a steal for a 12 gauge pump! I got the defense model, or whatever they call it with the 18.5 inch barrel, just for a plinkin farm shotgun.

I paid 230 for mine from the new cabelas in edmonton, that was with the taxes.
