I have a Maverick 12 g shotgun with a 18.5 inch barrel. What groups should I get with 2 3/4 inch 1 1/8 oz slugs. Say at about 50ft. Have had it quite a while with a fair amount of use.
Thanks

shotguns ain't rifles. There is no rifling to consider (or to get worn either...). So you need to look at them completely differently. Each shotgun is different as to what type and brand of slug it likes. Assuming there is nothing wrong with the gun, and that the stock bolt is tight, and nothing is rattling loose you can generally get pretty good accuracy with slugs. This also really depends on whether you are shooting with a bead, sights, or an optic. Your post is really too vague to answer the way you have framed the question. Maybe a little more detail would help.

I will try a bit more info. I got the pie plate alright. I tried a few Brenneke rounds 1 1/8 oz and then some CILslugs we had, 3 inch 1 1/8. Would like better groups as it was going to be the bear etc gun.As we have a cabin will out in the sticks.Never needed it ever, but we are fairly aware. Have shot quite a few clay targets with it will try with proper targets. Shooting at 1 gal jugs you can see the holes and they are always in different spots.Unlike the 10/22 which we can hit the shells with.

ok, now did you really mean 50 feet (about 17yards)? or do you mean 50 yards?

Pie plate sized groups would not be abnormal with a bead sight at 50 yards depending on the slugs used. The best thing to do is try a bunch of brands or types of slugs. But keep in mind the bead sight (if that is what you have) is a limiting factor. Also consider that tight groups is not terribly important in a bear defense gun. If you need to shoot a bear it will probably be very close and or charging. So a pump shotgun makes sense in that that you can swing, shoot, and cycle the action very quickly on a moving target. Accuracy at distances isn't the most important factor.

the other factor is the shooter. 3" slugs kick, and shotgun triggers are not 'glass rods'. So, practice might shrink the groups. But as I said, tight groups are not really that important. Hitting a moving target repeatedly under stress will be the issue
