Maverick Shotguns, they any good?

In regards to the tag safety this all depends which gun the OP wants, and for what purpose. If he wants the 28 inch field model for hunting yeah the tang safety may be a benefit, however if he is looking for the 18 1/2 inch model for home defense and thinking about a pistol grip then the tang safety is useless, and I would buy the Maverick over the mossberg for this reason.

And to manbearpig. After about 1000 rounds through my Maverick it has gotten very smoooth as well. It is also a hell of alot lighter than an 870 as well for luggin through the bush all day. There is good and bad things about every gun. It all depends on the purpose it is being used for. The OP should help us out and make it clear.

Good point. However, pistol grip only stocks on a shotgun are useless. Pistol grip stocks(full stock) are questionable at best. Nevertheless, the tang safety is something to consider when deciding on what stock to run.:)

TDC

ETA: I have both a Mossberg and a Maverick, never an issue with either.

I don't own a Maverick.
~
Do me a favour, unless you actually own and or try a firearm that is the topic of discussion, don't provide an answer.

seems like you should take your own advice

i have owned a Mossberg 500A and fired thousands of rounds of shot through it.

now go and point out where i actually bash the Maverick.
i said that theres nothing wrong with a Maverick, but you can often find a Mossberg 500 for 20-30 bucks more and they have 'marginally better quality' and full aftermarket support.

and since you brought it up: the Remington 710 is a POS. someone that continually sings the praises of the 710 pretty much lost all their credibility.

reaons i bought my maverick:

1. heard good reviews about it
2. came with two barrels. 28" and 18"
3. i don't like the feel of an 870. it doesn't fit me very well
4. maverick fits me very well
5. i don't like tang safeties.
6a. i prefer to buy my guns new, so i can learn the quirks and develop a "relationship" with them out of the box with no previous owner inspired surprises.
6b. because of the above and because i couldn't afford a new 500 at the time, i therefore settled for the maverick.
7. it's got plenty of aftermarket toys available for it. same as an 870 or a 500.
8. the price was right.

Yawn.

Mossberg forends will not fit on it. this is a dealbreaker for many since they plan on replacing the factory tupperware. there is a workaround if you source a Mossberg forend tube/action bar assembly for your Maverick, but then your total is over the price of a new Mossberg so there isnt really a point.
this is what i meant by 'complete aftermarket support'. only the buttstocks fit.

I have the older Maverick with one action bar. I have never had a jam or any other problems with it. The barrel rusted a bit when I was hunting ducks over sal####er, but some sand blasting and Tremclad paint and it was good to go for anther few hundred rounds. I have also fired some 3 inch magnum hand loads through it...with 2 ounces of lead in them  now that's a jolt in that light gun. I love mine and will never sell it.

As long as it has dual action bars. :)
youre right - people should buy old single-action bar Mavericks when you can buy a brand new Mossberg 500 combo with two barrels for $299 at Cabelas.

i paid $180 for my used Mossberg 500. but i guess it would have made more sense if i saved another $10 and went with a Maverick.
i understand budget guns - i have several Savages, 700 SPSes, etc - what i dont get is just saving money at all costs when for just a few bucks more you can get something thats 100% made in the US and has more compatibility.
if you prefer the ergonomics of a crossbolt safety to a tang safety, thats a different matter entirely.

you can get something thats 100% made in the US

The overstatement of the century. You do realize the US is full of unions that drive costs up but still requiring to have the products sell at marketable prices, the companies must resort to 'alternate' means of producing items at reasonable prices, right?

On a related note, I laugh everytime I hear somebody say "Made to US Milspec" like it's a good thing. Again, when was the last time any government issued a contract to the best product and not the lowest bidder?

i wouldnt pay twice the price for something just because its made in the US - im quite happy with my DA Grizzly, M 305, etc.... but id definitely pay a few bucks more for something built with US made parts as opposed to Mexican, and for compatibility with aftermarket forends. the tang safety is 100% personal choice, but i prefer those too.

Why yes, yes you are. :)
thats cute coming from one of the biggest SDs on CGN.

Just in case the OP is still looking for information in this abortion of a thread, I am very happy with my Maverick 88, although I can't say that I've put a ton of rounds through her. The fit and finish is better than I would expect from a $200 shotgun, and it puts the little balls of lead where I want them to go. For a cheap truck/camp gun, you can't go wrong.

One piece of advice: be sure you keep a Maverick WELL OILED at all times- the finish is the weak point on this gun.

Paul

So two action bars are only better than one on the Mossberg? All the other guns including the Ithaca 37 are better than a Mossberg with one action bar?? But not with 2. Is that what you were trying to say? When you said that having only one action bar was a pretty big draw back. How could I tell that statement was just for the Mossberg??

You guys are too funny:popCorn:

One thing I haven't seen mentioned... I chose a Mossberg 500 over a Maverick simply for the wood furniture... I prefer a 13.25" length of pull, and I cut down the butt to 12.25" and added a Limbsaver pad. Works great.

Can't cut down the plastic on a Maverick. If it came with the correct ( for me ) LOP I might have gone with the Maverick. Other then the LOP issue it seemed like a decent shotgun ( the ones I handled anyways )

I recalled seeing a feedback option on the WSS website so I checked the ratings for the Maverick. I thought the OP might find this worthwhile.

lots of gun for little money
By English Dave from Lethbridge Alberta on 1/16/2010
Pros:Durable, Great Value, Lightweight, Well Constructed
Best Uses:Outdoors
Describe Yourself:Enthusiast
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friendI bought the short barreled pistol grip model mainly to keep in the trailer/quad as a "just in case" when camping and it is perfect for this application, It appears to be well made, functions flawlessly and can take abuse and still perform. Needs some guts to pull the trigger though as the pistol grip recoil needs a positive attitude!!!

Great Value
By CK from Vancouver, BC on 12/8/2009
Pros:Durable, Great Value
Cons:Front grip is rough
Best Uses:Outdoors
Describe Yourself:Enthusiast
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friendI bought one for my son to use for waterfowl hunting. Has worked flawlessly and he has collected his first ducks and goose with it. The front grip is more comfortable when wearing gloves, but a little rough on bare hands when doing a lot of shooting.

Great Cheap Shotgun!
By AK from Calgary Alberta on 11/24/2009
Pros:Durable, Great Value, Lightweight, Well Constructed
Best Uses:Home Defence
Describe Yourself:Enthusiast
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friendGreat little cheap defence shot gun. I got the 18" barrel and pistol grip which makes it quite small and easy to travel in the bush with or to manuever in tight spaces.

Best value for money
By Nightwalker from Ottawa, ON on 10/21/2009
Pros:Durable, Great Value, Lightweight, Well Constructed
Cons:The quality of stock
Best Uses:Outdoors, Sports
Describe Yourself:Enthusiast
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friendThis was definately a great buy, the shotgun is amazing for the price in the field version 28". IT shoots extremly smooth, I have heard people complaining about recoil of this gun, even wit the factory stock its great.[...] i will buy again and again. The only slight issue was minor signs of rust on the trigger, i easyly wiped it with a slightly damp cloth.

Well at least we are making progress in at least one regard.

a Maverick 88 - one of the cheapest pump guns assembled in the US with Chinese parts.

Claybuster said:
The Maverick is indeed manufactured in the U.S. but with Mexican, not Chinese parts.

You're welcome.
