Maverick Shotguns, they any good?

the point is that the production costs have been cut even further, when the Mossberg is already an inexpensive mass produced pump gun.

The other thing that must be considered, 99% of shotguns sold are never modded with tacticrap accessories, thus aftermarket support is irrelevant. These guns are bought as work horses, not as a mall ninjas wet dream. Real people use these guns outside in the real world, not just in front of the mirror or on shooting ranges with legions of other mall ninjas cheering from the stands.

first thing i did on my DA Grizzly - also a cheap workhorse - is install a wood 870 stock and forend.
i put a Hogue stock set on my other 870 because i prefer the ergonomics to the cheap factory stock. the third has a factory 870P Speedfeed stock set that i am looking to replace with a basiic 870 wood set because i dont like the feel or ergonomics of the Speedfeed.

aftermarket stock support is very relevant.

are you implying that being able to purchase and install an aftermarket stock & forend is not a legit consideration for the average pump shotgun owner? or that you have to be a 'mall ninja' to want to replace your cheap factory stock & forend? 3/4 of the content of this forum seems to dispute your little theory:

i paid 100$ for mine new from Canadian tire about in 1998, just when the laws were changing. the same price i paid for a lakefield 22 semi. I bought one then bought then next day. i have had no issues but dont use it much

You almost have to be a mall ninja, or at least have aspirations of it. Most 870's, 500's and Mavericks just get used as is.

CGN doesn't necessarily represent the average shotgun purchaser.

99.9% of gun owners do not participate on internet chat forums. I do because I have no life and therefore nothing else to do. No, the average pump gun owner hardly ever cleans their gun, let alone rip it apart to put on God knows what mall ninjas dream up. Most people buy their guns and leave them as is. My 'theory' requires you to leave your computer and go outside and *gasp* talk to real world owners and not pay attention to all the computer experts. I will bet a good portion of my wages you won't see a tactical wet dream in a duck blind, pick up gun rack or deer stand. You may find them in your safe, but not mine. Nor will you find them in most other real peoples collections. Nor will you see bayonettes or breaching barrels. You'll find the odd pistol grip, and you'll also find a set of teeth in their owners glove boxes.

I thought I had asked you a legitimate Question. What do you use your Shotguns for? Your answer is "aggravating Fudds like you".Very Rich. I think your a mirror poser that blows off on statistics they read on the Internet or Magazines and has no real practical shooting experience at all.

After all "I'd rather be a Fudd than a Dudd".
 
I have owned a Maverick, an older (but new at the time) single action bar. I'm not sure why I sold it, I never had a problem with it. I think I just got a smoking deal on a Wingmaster so moved up.

I was recently talking to a well experienced gunsmith and I asked him why he didn't carry any of the Maverick slug guns, given that they seem to be such a good buy. His reply was that he sees some coming back with factory installed problems so he isn't comfortable selling them for bear defense because in that application you just can't have it fail. That seemed to me to be a sensible response.

i find it funny that i simply said that i dont see the point of buying a Maverick 88 when you can buy a Mossberg 500 for a few bucks more. i cant understand the motivation to shave another few bucks off a gun thats already dirt cheap.

this prompted pages of personal insults from you people, and weve arrived at the implication that you must be a mall ninja to think that being able to replace both the cheap factory stock and forend is an advantage in a gun :rolleyes:

its also amusing how you immediately jump to personal attacks when you have nothing intelligent to say.
 
If the OP is still even bothering with this thread I'd like to give my 2 cents. I was interested in a certain style of shotgun and was considering the Maverick. I visited some other Internet forums with more information and less bickering and found some good reviews.

Just for fun I shopped around before purchasing the Maverick. I found that Cabela's had the Mossberg equivalent on sale. Shipping and taxes included it worked out to be about $100 more for the Mossberg.

What did I get for the extra $100? A 10 year warranty as opposed to the Mavericks 1 year, the option of slightly more aftermarket parts(if I want them), and the parts are interchangeable with other 500 models. The safety location is a bonus if it fits your personal preference.

It depends on what you're looking for. I'm sure the Maverick would have suited me fine, but this is my first brand new gun and the extra perks were worth the extra $$ to me. If you're buying new you may want to have a look around before you purchase. Sometimes being on a budget means you should spend a bit more IMHO.
 
I wanted a shotgun last summer, just to have a shotgun. I chose the Maverick with 2 barrels (18" open and 28" modified choke), and it's been great.
I'm also not really afraid to do anything do it, beat it around a bit, etc.
A lot of the Mossberg 500 aftermarket parts will fit it. Not all though.
