Maverick Shotguns, they any good?

Ill likely look at getting an 88 Security this summer for my back country canoe camping trips. Looks like a decent gun, not too expensive.
 
I've had mine for about four years now and I like it a lot. It's light to carry and points well. I like that it holds five in the magazine and the slide release is better positioned (in my opinion) than the Remington 870.

However, for the price of a Mossberg 500 combo at $400, I would be hard pressed to justify paying more than $200 for a Maverick Defender. Especially considering the Moss 500 has a tang safety, is drilled and tapped for scope mounts and has a relaceable foreend.
 
I have not used the mavericks, but have a fair amount of experience with the 500's, which I've chosed for the tang safety, at a very small extra cost. I've found that the 500's, at least, are a very goo value for the price. Actually, my personal experience is that the 500's are more reliable in extremely dirty situations than rem 870's.
 
Well I just ordered a Knoxx 1200-C stock for my Mav88 an ATI pistol grip forehand and a Mossberg 500 Tube slide assembly ( 46$ )

So 200$ Shotgun with 300$ of accesories... Will post pics when I get back from the Olympics...
 
I have a Maverick with the twin action bars. Put a folding stock on it and turned it into a great security shotgun. Good deal for an American made gun.

I've put a few hundred rounds through it now and have no clue about the previous owner. It shows hardly any signs of wear, most of what is there is on the outside. I like it, it's light, points well and so far seems pretty durable. A tang safety would have been nice, but I'm still glad at the value I got for what I paid.

By best friend got one with the 2 barrels and it rocks. For the price it seems kick ass. His only real complaint has been that the mag tube spring makes a lot of noise.
 
Here is a question I have wanted to know the answer to for quite some time. Is the Mossberg SPECIAL PURPOSE MARINER based off of the maverick 88? Or maybe the 500? I am finding info that is all over the place saaying it is a 500 and even a 590a1. What is the deal with this? More importantly can the marine finish be had with the 88??
