what do you guys think would be the max barrel weight a person could hang off the front of a rem repeater action? i am looking to put a 30" straight taper barrel on mine but am not sure if the action is too flimsy to be consistent with this type of load on the front of it.

Might have to bed the first couple inches of the barrel to help hold it up. I currently have a straight 1.25" barrel on my XR-100 action but I have an inch or so of the barrel bedded in front of the recoil lug.

Why not go with a heavy varmint contour which is .900 at the muzzle. Not a whole lot thinner but will save 3 #'s.

Obviously total weight is not a problem... why not bed the barrel in a block and float everything that hangs out of the block.

It will not harm accuracy to bed the action and 4 inches of the barrel as long as it is done without any tight screws or clamps causing stress.

You could probably hang the barrel off the action with no real problems but I have to agree with Dennis; why not go with a barrel block? It turns the action into a non-stressed piece (as far as bedding is concerned anyway) and effectively shortens the barrel.
It might be educational to fit the barrel and bed it conventionally with the barrel fully floated then check for locking lug contact (assuming it was good to start with). If it's unchanged, the barrel weight is likely not a concern. Regards, Bill.
