Hey guys.. here I go with another question. .if any of you have a .300 Win Mag.. I seated a bullet real long into an empty unprimed case and crunched it to get my rifle's max OAL with that bullet... it came out to 3.696'' .. longer than the book says but my issue of reloading manual only states one OAL not one for each bullet weight.. does this number seem reasonable enough to you'
Can i now back it off .020'' and try it out?

What rifle do you have? 3.375" is about the longest cartridge that will fit in the mag of my Ruger 77 MkII 300win. At this length the bullet is way off the lands but I still get good hunting accuracy and no feeding issues. If you have a single shot, or will only load your repeater one at a time then you can seat them way out there as long as there is enough bullet in the neck for good tension. If you plan on feeding from a box mag, seat them so they function reliably and try them for accuracy. Go from there.
 
Pretty much what moose masher said, the book isnt the bible when it comes to OAL. Its all dependant on your rifle and how big your mag box is. None of my bullets touch the lands and they are very accurate.

It's a Sendero.. there is no detachable mag, just a floor plate so i suppose i'll check to see how well it cycles in and out.. probably go quite a bit shorter right off the bat and play around.. thanks for your input
 
Haven't had a Rem. for many years but the older ones had 3.7 boxes so as long as you're off the lands you're good. I think my longest Rem. factory 300 WM throat allowed about 3.55". Make sure you understand and know whats going on before shooting.

What exactly is going on.. I think I understand ,you need to back off the lands to allieviate pressure and disaster right? as long as i pull pack .020" from where the dummy shell crunched to I should be good right?
maybe I'll start back .100" to be safe until you reply

If you're .020 off the lands, and it feeds reliably through the mag, you're good to go. I use the same crunch test for OAL, repeating it about 3 times to be sure. You have to do the test over if you change to different brand/weight bullets...
