Effective range doesn't mean 'killing range'. It's the range at which the size of the 'area of fire' is larger than a man shaped target.

Ie: at 400 yards, you could no longer guarantee a hit with one shot.

If I recall - I could be waay off.

I don't think he was talking about accuracy or effectiveness. I think he just wanted to know how far away the gun is still a danger.

From what I remember reading in several Soviet/Russian books, the maximums for the AKM:

Effective range: 400m
Sightable range: 1000m
Lethality range: 1500m
Bullet travel: 3000m

I still wouldn't wanna take 7.62x39 in the head at 2800m.

Federal says the 123grain has 1100+ fps at 500 yards, a 93" drop. Pretty lethal past 400 meters id say.
