Maximum effective range

This depends on optics. It will be difficult to hit the vitals with the free 3-9x scope and $5 rings on most entry level rifles. I have a Savage youth in 7mm-08 with an "upgraded" Bushnell dusk to dawn. That one will be a 100-150 yard rifle. My son's Savage 16 in 7mm-08 with a better Burris FFII and Leupold rings will be 250 yards or so.

This will be extended somewhat with hand loads - grouping is not great with the Savage 16 for some unknown reason (I use a Titegroup 44 rest).

My older Remington 700 in 7mm-RM will be good for whatever. This rifle delivers groups that touch at 100yards with factory ammo. It also has Leupold rings and a Bushnell Elite 4-16x40.

It really comes down to the weakest component of the "system". Most of the time, that is the user.
