May 27 Bear Pix - finally, a shooter? (see end)

Not sure if these are all of the same bear, or if they are of the same bear we had earlier.

There was a lot of green, runny scat around the site, looked different than the stuff they left earlier. Different bear?

A buddy of mine sat with me in the stand tonight. We had a bear come in, but we couldn't tell if it had a cub behind it or not, because it sneaked out of the woods, sniffed the bait, and then walked away. We could have shot, but I think we made the right call by not shooting. It probably would have seen us moving to aim anyway.

We checked our baits left for 2 weeks during home renos and one barrel was empty.Minus 1 50lb beaver ,50+ lbs fish guts and 2 lawnbags of popcorn.Refilled and will sit my son up over it mid week.............Harold

That would ba a major ground shrinkage bear, you would be disapointed with that one, unless you were just looking to eat it.
Look for a bear with its belly low to the ground, thick legs, small ears and a crease in the forehead. You will know a big boar when you see it, if there's any doubt about it being not big enough it isn't.

Interesting pics! Thanks for posting!

Well, I am just looking to eat it. I can't really afford a rug, unless it was a huge bear, and then I'd do it. I like to keep the skulls, too.

I do want a bigger bear, though, so I think I will hold off on this one. I am hunting with two other guys, though, and our other stand is still dead, so one of them may shoot this one - neither of them has shot a bear before. I got one about this size last year, and I would like a bigger one this year.

I don't think that's the only bear in the bait, though - the small bear looks to be smaller than the sow, and we also had this bear, which I think is different and bigger. The piles of bear crap that were left by this bear were much bigger, that's for sure, and also of different composition.

More pictures.

The pattern seems to hold solid every day. The first bear into the bait is the bigger momma bear with cub. She spends late afternoon, early evening there. Then after that comes junior bear, who I would guess is a yearling. He comes in almost as soon as she leaves, and stays until she comes back.

I'm just not sure if there is another bear coming in at night or not, but I am guessing no.

Hopefully I can get some boars coming in soon.

^ How much longer does your season run? Reason I ask is if you can keep hunting another couple of weeks, even better, into the middle of June, then you're going to get some rut activity. Some big boars that might not visit your bait site, may begin to show up due to interest in the sow(s) that are coming to your bait.

Bears are no different in that regard than any other big game animal; prime hunting period is during the rut, if your seasons permit. That is if you are interested in a really big boar. There's no better time to get 'lucky' then if you can hunt the rut, when the big guys are more active.
