Tonight I was coming home, Just got here. I was on the way home from the wellesly phillipsburg, st.agatha area in southern ont. And I would swear that I just spotted a young black bear. I was driving my normal route home on the back gravel roads with my offroad lights on, Pulled up to the T intersection which was corn stubble and seen a set of eyes out about 400 yrds away. I pulled up my binoculars and I either saw the biggest coon without a tail I've ever seen or a bear. When I stopped it ran quartering away into the bush. It didn't really run it hobbled away. Jeeeezzz I didn't even believe myself at first but why not, Ive heard about sightings. Guess were gonna need the spring bear hunt here too!

Has anyones else seen em down here? Seen lots farther north but Not here.

Ben

It's entirely possible you saw a black bear. Last year there was one was roaming around the Cambridge/Guelph area and that wasn't the first time they've been around.

Almost 3 years ago a young boar was hanging around Southern Wellington County and Flamborough Township. It came onto our property late one night, went through our horse corrals and was nosing around our barn when I caught up with it, 870 in hand. We stared at each other at a distance of about 25 yards for a minute or two before it wandered off. The bear showed absolutely no fear of humans but given that it wasn't presenting a specific threat to me or the animals I let it go on its way. The response would have been quite different had it moved toward me or back to where the horses were.

A few days later it bluff charged a neighbour and her dog about a mile south of us, moved into Flamborough, caused further problems and was shot and killed by police and animal control officers.

The most fun was phoning the MNR bear hotline and filing a report. They were, to put it mildly, shocked.

They follow the "green belt" south. A couple years back there were warnings posted at Crawford Lake Conservation Area about bear sightings and what to do in case of an encounter.....

there was reports of a black bear and 2 clubs chasing horses on a farm in Amaranth township (WMU 81A) either last year or 2 years ago. I remember reading it in the newspaper and they had pics of the tracks...

Just a guess, but with the ban on the spring bear hunt and the last atricle I read saying that black bears incidents are up 400% in Ontario, I'd bet that you'd be able to see a bear just about anywhere in the province.

Dont tell anyone...........you will have police choppers circling the area with in minutes and the swat team/local police will have it captured or killed with in the hour.

There was one spotted a few times in the Guelph/Cambridge area last year. The only thing that happened was that people were told to bring pets in at night.

Southern Ontario is ex-bear country and the bears are just trying to return there. I would like to see a program setup to trap the nuisance bears in Northern Ontario and release them in Southern Ontario. The reason they are a nuisance in the north is because there are to many of them and they are crowded out of the remote territories and forced into town. There are hardly any bears in Southern Ontario so it makes perfect sense to relase soenm there.

We've got some nuisance politicians we could send that way, they are far more dangerous than a little black bear though...

Send 'em in the same truck. The politicians will undergo an 'attitude change' and the bears will be happy and fed, and not a nuisance.

Problem solved.

Probably wouldn't hurt and I'd love to see a local bear season. WMU 82 , just to the north of us has a bear season. 20 yrs ago when I grew up there the MNR swore there were no bears in Grey/Bruce (despite random sightings). We have a huge population of coyotes down here, adding some bears to the mix is unlikely to make a huge difference. As long as we can hunt them, ship some down.
