I was tantalized by the idea of a mag-fed shotgun and thought it was a novel idea “why hasn’t this been done already”... that was until I got a DA Grizzly mag-fed shotgun. Aside from being a P.O.S. the novelty wore off quickly. The only real benefit is to mag-dump it for fun. That’s it. Otherwise it’s unwieldy and unpractical.

As I recall a shotgun is a “load what you need” type gun, and if you actually need more than 5 shotgun shells to “solve” a problem, you chose the wrong gun and have much bigger problems.

The best reason for a mag fed shotgun is that you want/need a firearm to go from unloaded (and possibly in storage) to
Loaded in a hurry.

Bonus is you can have different msgs loaded with different ammunition for different purposes. ( slugs for bears - buckshot for coyotes - smaller shot for a raccoon in the chicken coop)

They benefit competition shooters for speed and ease of reload, if they function correctly. Which they usually don't.

Some people can't be bothered to get good at loading shotguns, and like to bit¢h about it at matches. The mag fed guns in theory solve that problem, but then they bit¢h about how their shotgun won't run. Lol. If you find the unicorn mag-fed semi that functions flawlessly... Keep it :)

Lol.

How did that happen? I got the “black green” part right.

No worries! We've been getting more than a few questions meant for other forums.

Black and Green Rifles
Black and Green Precision Rifles
Black and Green Shotguns

Gets kind of confusing :d

Exactly what and why I use a mag fed at home. Can be stored legally but quickly loaded with either a mag of buck or slugs. Pretty much every predator you can have in Canada goes through my yard from fishers to bears to coyotes and even cougars. A cougar got road killed very close to my house a few years ago.

Derya MK12 has been perfect for me for 2 years now. Not 1 single malfunction. Totally trust it to work.

I agree with Gatehouse, my mag fed Grizzly has been great for ground swatting grouse since I put a choked barrel on it. Easy to load and unload while getting in and out of the truck when I see a grouse on the road.

I have a 15SA and an AS46 and like the detachable mags for their ease of loading.

That being said, of the 5 shotguns that I own, the one on the right is the one that I consider my "house gun".

I found that soft squishie plastic shell casings and mag feeding do not work well together any slight touch on an edge and you get a feed issue because the plastic will deform into the hard metal edge any edge anything harder then the plastic. Annoying as hell and not worth the hassles

I guess my opinion is bias as I don’t bird hunt. I skeet shoot and need it for the occasional raccoon or magpie, etc. So one in the chamber and a few down the tube works fine. Low pressure situations... except magpies... you have to sneak up on them and let loose. Lol

The other benefit of the mag fed shotgun is the unspeakable... which brings up the question of long term storage of shells in a magazine.

well. I have had both, mag & Tube.I still prefer the tube fed. Less jams & I find I can cycle the tube fed faster.
when I'm bush trotting, I will have no# 7, 3, & slugs loaded for what ever comes my way.

just gotta remember what order I put them in....LOL

When you're talking about having a mag loaded and ready for extended periods, it's no different for a shotgun or rifle. It's the action is depressing or releasing the spring that puts wear on it, not keeping it depressed as a loaded mag.
So if you rotate your mags around monthly, good to go. If you're rotating it each day, that's a lot of wear.

That said, improved mag springs make a difference. All my shotguns have longer springs just for the extra life and tension.

You can probably figure out what my preference is between tube mags or detachable

I'd want to run metal hulled shells if I was going to depend on a box mag shotgun for anything serious.

SAP6 ive owned = junk
Derya mk12 = worked great for the 400 rounds i shot (even with AS46 mags)
Brixia PM5 = flawless Italian quality
Valtro PM5 = flawless Italian quality

Still own both PM5's but if its life or death ill go with my TacOrd 870.
