May the 4th Bear down on me ^^

Right awn Ryo'ozzzzzz......

Oh, this thread is yewseless widdowt GPS co-ordinates....................cou:

You can have them if you want LOL it's far from my usual stomping grounds, I was just getting impatient and went a bit more east than usual ^^ though I certainly did get rewarded for stepping out of my comfort zone so to speak!

Now just counting the days until the weekend so I can take my hunting partner out to connect with his first bear !! Fingers crossed

Did you get the squared measurement on your fine Bear?

No sir, being relatively new to this I was 100 percent focused on enduring the hide was cleaned and stored properly while I wait for my taxidermist. I assume this is something I could ask him to do for me before he gets started ? I'd definitely be interested to know.

I've decided I'm going to prep the hide prior to bringing it to the tannery, so I will be able to do the measurements myself. Quite excited to get a skull measurement off this bruin as well, his head is a cinder block !!!

Oh man, you eve hear of shrinkage?
Kinda like when a guy goes swimming in the ocean and when he comes out there is a turtle where a python used to live.
The shrinkage usually starts after the hide is off and rolled up for storage in the freezer till the taxidermist is consulted.
I think your going to be in for a surprise ;)

I'm just pulling your leg, your taxidermist will gladly do his best to give you the best score possible without having to fudge anything.
Hows the work going on the skull and cleaning?
I hear Dawn dish soap will help remove the grease and meat from the skull while it is being cooked off in a pot.
Best do that outside cause the one who rules the roost will certainly let her thoughts be known if doing this in her kitchen.
Actually, boil is not the right word.
Use a medium rapid simmer to cook the meat off and of course some scrapping as well to get the stubborn bits off.
Power washer will come in handy too or so I am told.

That's a heck of a nice bear!

Thank you everyone, this spring has certainly been treating myself and my hunting partner well!

We headed out at 315 pm yesterday, and after a 100km drive, 2-3km hike and a 250 yard shot, we had another nice boar down! Two this week!
Hopefully this both fills our freezers for the summer, and helps the local moose, elk and deer population! I'm confident that big boar bears lunch on quite a few baby ungulates each year.

Make that two for RyoT, one for his hunting buddy. 3 boares in 7 days.
Was lucky enough to stalk up on another big brown bruin yesterday evening and he was 24 lbs heavier on the meat hook than the original post... Pictures and short story to follow. First year bear hunting, and two 6+ foot color phase pumping head boars.... Time to go get me a lotto max!!!

Will try to encourage my hunting partner to post his black boar up as well!

Looky still zippiditty dew-daw day.
Oww many now Royzooooooooooo?

Fruck, I'm gonna stawlk the stawker.................:p

Won't be hard to see, or find my bright red truck haha. and anywhere I can get, I'm sure you can ;)

Still only at 3... going for number 4 tomorrow evening :D

This big boy may very well be the brother to the other I got, Same valley, 4km away or less, we hiked up over the ridge and he was feeding on a patch of dandylions and didnt care we were there! he expired right on an old FSR and after some brush and log clearing we were able to get right to him!

this wraps up my spring season as both my tags are filled, but I'll be out hiking and working hard to help my hunting partner fill his second one as well! fill all four for spring so we can focus on Elk and moose come fall.

Any luck kamlooky!? We have been out for our last tag a couple times and have passed on atleast a dozen bears, the more they spread out the harder it is to hone in on the big boars!

Congrats, I am jealous beyond belief; I have always lusted after a beautiful colour-phase bear like those. The bear in the last pics is magnificent.

As far as squaring and scoring and all the other measurement-taking...sure, do it if it floats your boat, but does it really matter? You have the experience of a terrific hunt, and the memory of the event will be heightened each time you look at the trophy. Will a number (of inches, or pounds, or whatever...) really do anything to improve that? I've never "scored" an animal in my life and somehow it hasn't caused me any grief.

What are you planning for the hide? Traditional rug, full mount, or...?

Be careful when you do the skull. Dish soap is indeed a great way to cut the grease, and bear skulls are notoriously greasy. If it dries and starts to show yellowish areas, there's still some grease there and it needs more simmering in the soap solution. Be very careful when dumping out the water, as the teeth will loosen and it is easy to lose some of the smaller ones. Finally, when the skull is clean and dry and white, a few coats of watered-down white glue painted on will strengthen it and reinforce the bone without looking artificially shiny. I hope you post some pics of the finished product(s).

Again, congratulations!
