... I've had this idea for a while. Ever since the first time I heard/read about the US or Canada wanting to change their weapon/caliber.
7.62x40.
Would only need to change existing rifle barrels and mags and maybe mag pouches.
Would take 7.62x39 if the bolt had 1mm of sprung give. We could use their ammo.
Rifles (AK's) could not use it as it would be too long. They couldn't use our ammo.
Everyone knows it's a capable round as is. An extra millimeter and a couple grains of powder...

Now here is where all you ammunition technical guru's tell me how brilliant or way off base I am. :)

A 7.62x40 quite literally already exists, having been created by Wilson Combat. It is theoretically better suited to super-sonic loads than .300 blk (however only if you're comparing super sonic) but it suffers in the sub-sonic/suppressed area, which is why .300 blk is so popular... it can be suppressed easily, while still having reasonable super-sonic loads as well.
