does anybody shoot a McGowan barrel, is button rifling as god as cut? i am interested in a 8 twist for my 223, the price is a bit better than a rockcreek

Both styles of rifling have existed for a very very long time. Both have been used by top tier manfs and both styles of rifling have won their fare share of hardware.

Barrel production goes in waves with one style and/or manf doing great and then the other getting the spot light.

I feel this has more to do with the batch of steel that is offered to the manf and how good that alloy might be then the benefit of one rifling style over another.

They can both produce spectacularly accurate barrels and it is the final lapping and QC that determines the odds of success more then the way the grooves were manf.

How are McGowen barrels? Those I have used seem pretty good.
Are buttoned barrels as good as cut? Yes. Some buttoned barrels are better than some cut barrels. The reverse is also true. I have shot some superb cut rifled barrels and some equally superb buttoned barrels. I have also shot crappy examples of both types. Regards, Bill.

I have shot probably 10 different McGowan barrels and they all shot very well. The only problem I ever had was with the prefit barrels not being chambered very well. Buy a blank and have it chambered by a reputable gunsmith and you should do very well. They also have instated a extra quality control step to measure the chamber before shipping that came about because of the last barrel I sent back to them.

More then 20 years ago I put a McGowan barrel in 375 Whelen Improved on a 1908 Brazillian Mauser. I've since put a few THOUSAND rounds through it. 'Nuff said.

I have a McGowen 26" stainless fluted in .264wm it rocks my socks.

I just bought a McGowen 28" 1-7ROT .22-250 Stainless barrel from another CGN'er can't wait to try it out.

I bought a used savage prefit mcgowen barrel in 6.5-284 and I sold it to a nieghbor before I used it. Kinda wish I didn't. Every time I see him he tells me how great it shoots. At 100 yds he gets 4 out 5 shots in one bug eyed hole. I blame the flier on him :D

I built my 221 Fireball on a McGowan blank. So far it seems to shoot reasonably well.

The one thing I noticed is that the bore isn't nearly as smooth or consistent as a more expensive custom barrel. There are smooth spots and rough spots down the barrel.

Is that going to make a difference in the end? I don't know. The price of a McGowan barrel is certainly right but I don't think I'd try to compare one directly to a more expensive name.
