McGowen Barrels

I put a McGowen premium barrel on a 98 Mauser in 35 Whelen many years ago. It shot better than the two shilens I put on other rifles. I would have no hesitation of using one again. My friend had put one on a .358 Norma Mag. and I've seen it cloverleaf three shots at 100 yds. He also is a fan of the McGowen barrels....Ken

The McGowen barrels are now made by a group in Kalispell, Montana. The only real similarity to the old McGowen barrels is in the name. I have used a half dozen so far. All look fine in all respects. I done have enough feedback yet to report on performance.
The bores are generally straight and consistent in size. Internal finish is very good. Stress relieving is correctly done and the barrels show no tendency to "walk" when machined.
I am presently working with one which is an eight inch twist 224 barrel chambered in 22-250. The barrel is on a Savage action which of course handicaps it considerably (my dig at the Savgae fans on the forum!) so we'll see how it stacks up.
In general, I think a person wanting a BR grade barrel should stick with proven brands (Krieger, Shilen, Hart etc.). Your odds of getting a winner are better. For a field rifle though, the McGowens seen to be just fine. Regards, Bill.
