McMillan A5 question

I just ordered an A5. Molded in color, fixed LOP, non-adjustable cheekpiece, Bipod stud plus 2 flush cups on the bottom, and two flush cups on the off side. I'm putting a varmint contoured .223 in it with 1" low aluminum rings and 20 MOA rail for a VX III 3.5-10X40 with M1's. Bottom metal undecided.

Do I go standard or sniper fill in the A5?

What are flush cups and standard vs sniper fill?

Flush cups replace sling swivel studs with a quick coupler air hose type setup, and the fill is well the fill in the stock. Sniper fill being heavier and more dense.

Get the lightest fill they have if you are going to carry it at all. It will still be way stronger then you need(according to mcmillan themselves).

The sniper fill is for bench guns, or if you drop your gun a lot.

If you have reservations, run it by mcmillan themselves. They are quite helpful, in spite of several big $ orders.

Nope, but thanks for the info. I knew they could fill them during manufacture to desired weight as per customer order, but I had no idea stocks were available with these options. Is that a permanent one time only or can you adjust the weight on command to suit your stock weight day to day for your needs?

I went with magnum fill for my A5, heavier than regular fill and not as heavy as sniper fill.

I think the difference in weight is about between 1/4 to 1/2 of a pound. Not heavy at all, No heavier that a colon full of last night meal

2.5-4.5 lbs, although much of this will be for adjustable cheek piece. For a 223, I would go light if I were going to use it for coyotes. ~5lbs of stock on a 223 does not make sense to me.

If you are going with a heavy barrel (MTU or similar) I would suggest the sniper fill to help balance the rifle.

Actually, the Leupold is about a pound lighter then a Nightforce....I would recommend the extra weight.

Sniper fill apparently adds a pound, and I do have a solid stud up front for the bipod.

I had intended to go standard fill from the get go, but have had a couple of guys try and steer me towards the sniper fill. This will be my 6th McMillan all have been standard fill and they have been great even off a pod. Pod use hasn't been alot though.

The guns do get heavy.. my rig is already at 12 pounds and I don't even have the rings or optics yet... and those NF rings are going to add some weight.

Off on a tangent, anyone recommend a good carry and shooting sling?

I have two A5's both with sniper fills. They are nice and balance well.

Sniper fill for sure.Makes for a solid feel and nice balance especially if you are running a longer barrel.
