I am looking at the MDT field stock for a short action Savage. I have the 2nd gen action with double feed internal box mag with 4.275" action bolt spacing. Will this work with the field stock or not?

I've emailed MDT but have not received an answer, so I'm hoping someone here has the answer to this.

Thanks,
Mark

You should be good to go. Your current magazine being staggered feed, doesn't matter. You're switching to aics mags with the chassis. MDT machines the front action screw pocket to accept both hole spacings. The rear action screw location is the same no matter what. Depending on which spacing you require, there is an oblong plate/washer (with an offset hole) for in the front pocket that covers a slot. You just 180* the washer for whichever hole spacing your action uses. See the red arrow in the picture for the plate/washer that covers the slot in the chassis.

Unless things have changed the MDT Savage stock are compatible with the 4.4 and 4.27 screw spacings as well as top and bottom bolt release. I have 3 MDT chassis. You will need to remove the attached magazine well. Their website still says this.

Thank you, sir. I went all over that site and didn't find that answer. I did know about removing the mag, that is no problem.

That's a simple and likely very effective solution to the bolt-spacing problem. :)

This has always been my one major beef with Savage rifles. For me, they've always functioned well and been very accurate, but over the years Savage has had so many variations in areas like single-stack vs. staggered-feed, top vs. bottom bolt release, bolt-spacing distance, small-shank vs large-shank barrels, round-top vs. flat-top receiver profiles, at least two magazine-release styles/locations, blah, blah, blah, that it just becomes a bit of a PITA when one looks for accessories, even if you are buying OEM stuff vs aftermarket.

Hell, they even went and changed the nomenclature of their actions, when they inexplicably stopped calling the short-action rifles by a 2-digit number and instead reverted to using the 3-digit ID for both short and long action.

Enough already! I'm not a Remington fanboy, but at least a short-action model 700...is a short-action model 700. You wanna buy an aftermarket stock for one, whether its brand-new or decades old, that's all you need to know. Much easier and better system.

I have 5 Savage rifles, all of them pre-accutriger, but have the two different bolt spacing. One of them has a large shank barrel. At least they all have the round top receivers for scope mount compatibility.

In order to use an accustock on one of them I had to modify a recoil luggage to fit. I wish Savage be consistent and stop making changes.

I'm grateful that MDT came up with an innovative way to make their chassis compatible with all of the Savage variants.

The Field stock does both 4.27 and 4.4. I have a stevens 200 with the 4.27 spacing and had no problems.
