MDT Oryx Chassis

Saw this in my email today too. Looks pretty solid, and with the US exchange rate, and rising costs, this isn't much more money than a Boyds stock.

Be nice to get one for my Winchester Ranger 30-06 if they support it. Be nice to update it and use it more. Kicks to much for smaller people but I always loved it. Very accurate, was my first rifle.

Should do well at that price point and MDT has a reputation for quality, too bad it looks like an aluminum 2x4 IMHO.

I guess the idea is to not require a butt stock etc.
Considerably cheaper as you don't require more purchases to complete the package.

I'd love to get one for my Mini and do a side by side with my LSS Chassis.

I really just want a chassis system that I can drop my short action into that takes AR mags, instead of some proprietary or expensive AICS mags.

With the exception of the Mossberg patrol and a few of the newer Ruger American models specifically made to accept an AR magazine, the magazine well opening on bolt action rifles like the 700 will not allow an AR magazine to enter.

perhaps my google fu is lacking but according to what I can find online AR 15 magazines are actually skinnier than the AICS mags that everyone seems to be using. Is this wrong, or is it a length problem?

I think this chassis just blew the Magpul Hunter 700 out of the water. Almost all aluminium vs almost all plastic. Similar weight, similar price with options. Just as I'm getting out of the 700 game, this might suck me back in.

AICS system is single position feed. Because of this, the magazines work with any 700.

the AR is narrower in the body, but they are double stack - double feed. an AICS is double stack (sort of) and tapers into a single feed. This is what allows it to enter into a Remington receiver.

polymer 223 mags in AICS format are $40'ish... given the hassle it will be to modify an AICS magwell to function with an AR mag, I would definitely go AICS 223 route.

Plus these will feed smoother as some actions do not pick up well from staggered feed mags... and then you have to ensure the bolt will fit the AR lip opening, etc, etc.

It can be a fitment pain which is why there are so few AR mag DBM kits or factory rifles to support this.

Been shooting 223 in AICS mags for years and they can work very well...and allows for a much longer OAL if desired.

Love my Aics single feed magazines....for those of you who swear by double stack- double feed magazines, I also shoot my AI that uses AW magazines , and they are just as reliable feeding as my AICS style magazines....lots of options, what’s not to like?

It’s all those rigs that use proprietary magazines that can be annoying at my matches, they have troubles once I start stressing you at my matches; for those of you who have never shot the 200 meter Rapid Follow Up NSCC Matches as hosted by the DCRA folks in Connaught, that’s the match where all the magazine gremlins appear that you will swear have never existed at your home club when sighting in at the bench....

At this point, I break a rib laughing so hard.....while watching people fzck around with stressful mag feeding situations! Hahahahaha

Buy quality! Save yerself a shztload of grief!

Cheers, Barney

I wouldn't say that. They really aren't built for the same thing. The Magpul stock is aluminum through it's core, from the grip all the way to the forend. Either way, competition is a win for us.

Fair. I am not down on the AICS mags, I just have 8 other guns that run AR mags and about 40 mags for them. Didnt want to have to buy a rack of aics mags if I didnt have to.

I did a AR bottom metal conversion on a 700 in 300 blk. The results were decent but not even close to a drop in. Spent a lot of time opening up the magwell to get the mags to sit in far enough and feed reliably. If wanting to stick to AR mags I'd go with a ruger action designed to take them and drop it in a MDT LSS-XL inletted for that model.
