when measuring a barrel ie to make sure that its longer then 18.5" do you measure from the very end IE the part that is inside the recieveer or do you measure from the outside of the barrel where it meets the reciever?
talking about a shotgun barrel BTW
 
close thew action, stick cleaning rod down barrel until it touches the bolt face..... mark rod at end of barrel.

measure.... convert to millimeters then look at your FRT disks for the closest match. (should be within 1-5 mm)

Further to this correct procedure, I would just want to add that the approved procedure from CFC for all firearms verifiers is to use a cleaning rod and insert it into the barrel as far as it will go (bolt closed, etc) and then measure this lenght from the end of the barrel. Doing handgun revolvers is some what different.

As far as muzzle breaks and chokes, it depends if they are fixed or removeable. If in doubt, call CFC (I believe ext 1050 - I'm not at home and can't cofirm this) and talk to one of the firearms technicians.

so if i wanted to say make a mark at the 20" point on the outside of a 30" barrel just take a tape measure from breach and measure 20" towards the muzzle and should be good right?
just asking cause i am cutting the wifes barrel down and i DO NOT want to be shorter then 20" that way i give my self a little leway with 18.5" CFC thing so i have to make a mark and then cut a few inches at a time till the wife finds the length she likes and is comfortable with
 
Isn't it 18.5" for semi-automatic, and 18" for non-semi ?
Regardless of the above, the tape measure should be OK, though not as accurate, as long as you are totally sure that you are being on the safe side and leaving room for a margin of error.

thats why i am going to be useing 20" as the stop point :D :D
 
no what you should do is measure the total length and then subtract the amount you need and then measure from the muzzle back to the point you want to cut, make sure to add about 1mm for the thickness of the blade cutting.
 
but i dont know how much i need off the wife has to hold it after it has been cut to see if it feels right lol so i have to cut little bits off at a time
