I got into an interesting discussion with a fellow at the range one day about how to measure a "barrel".

He said that in order to measure a "barrel length" many people put a rod down the barrel from the muzzle end into an empty chamber till they hit bottom. Mark the muzzle end of the rod and remove it and measure from the deep end to the mark on the rod.

Measured that way my .357 mag. S&W revolver would not be prohibited. But if you measure what looks like a "barrel" with a tape on the outside of the gun, it is prohibited.

I forget what it officially says about measuring "barrels" or handgun "barrels" in the "Rock Rules".

Your buddy is RIGHT as far as semi-auto's go. That is the 'CFC approved' method of measuring barrel length.

For Revolvers, the chamber is not considered part of the barrel, because they are not physically one part. The barrel has no chamber on a revolver. The chamber is the cylinder! :)

Autoloader - with the slide closed, drop a pencil down the barrel, mark the pencil at the muzzle, remove pencil and measure.

Revolver - swing open cylinder and use a set of calipers from the muzzle to the forcing cone.
