Measuring fired brass

So say I want to check the dimension of my chamber from fired brass am I using the top of the neck angle or the bottom " wider angle " from the base of the shell as I take it overall length isn't the important thing. It's 2.025 overall by the way.
 
"...check the dimension of my chamber from fired brass..." That won't give you exact dimensions. Brass expands upon firing then contracts a wee bit for extraction. It'll be close though. Doesn't tell you much about the headspace either. Headspace isn't measured anyway. It's just checked for tolerance with Go/No-Go guages.

headspace is the distance measured from the part of the chamber that stops forward motion of the cartridge (the datum reference) to the face of the bolt. so depending on the chamber it could be tight or loosely headspaced but should be in the range defined by the go and nogo guage -so it is can be measured right?
 
Iam aware that brass is highly malleable and will stretch and shrink " elasticity " . Was just looking for a general reference since I don't have nor do I want to buy go nogo gauges.
 
I have measured brass and steel cases from the same rifle and there was about one thou difference between the lot of them. The looser the chamber the more stretch is going to play a part.

Measuring the "headspace" of once fired brass, although not an exact measurement, should give you a rough idea of the size of your chamber. This is good information since some of the chambers I have measured were well over 0.014 over the .308 go gauge./ 1.644 is well beyond the 1.638 field rejection guage.

My spent brass out of my M305 now measures 1.630.....
